south texas | I think i shimed blades to tight with the 3.5mms. Doing 1.5in now. Some bearing housings are worn as well, some shiming with coke or beer cans will take it up. Jd has new bearings for 8.75 my local supplier 8.50 shoup 5.95 my local guy says his are one grade below NTN. $2.50 is alot of difference if his and shoup are same quality. Disks are 14.75, i will probably run them to 14-14.25 if grains stay low priced. Anyone have quality issues with shoup? im working on 2nd planter with 32 rows. Hopefully less than 1/4 need replacing. First one was 5 out of 16 Edited by coastalBend 12/28/2016 19:29

West Union, IOWA FLOLO Farm 52175 | Shoup has always worked here.... But Heck if you're going for cheap.... https://www.thebigbearingstore.com/204ry2-204fvmn-special-ag-bearing... Assuming these are older steel row units, Cast shanks take heavier bearing Edited by loran 12/28/2016 19:35

Nashville, IL | Can't say on opener bearings, but I will say you get what you pay for. We went the cheap route on closing wheels for our planter this year. Half the wheels needed new bearings. Other half might have made it. We bought from Sloans Express. Can't say anything bad about them because they offered to refund the money. Changed all 72 wheels. 1200 acres of corn and they were falling off the planter. Ended up replacing half or so with the ones I took off to get thru planting. Very disappointed in them. We bought the wheel and bearing for what a bearing would have cost from John Deere. Would have been better off putting bearings in our old wheels.

West Union, IOWA FLOLO Farm 52175 | I'd argue that...... I know 1 company tried offering a better blade this yr, on the production model..... Prototype had .....Shoup blades.... Half the hub caps fell out before we left shop...... 150a on a 30' bar..... we had bearing going out, and the longest made 1500...... most blade are junk at 1000, but I figured let see how far the lasted.

I've always been a big proponent of Shoup, but I now get my opener blades and closing disks from CIH because of bearing troubles. Can't say what they use for JD, but those cheap Chinese bearings in the Shoup blades and disks sometimes didn't even make it 2 days. Started having trouble a couple years ago.
Edit: Meant to say Shoup bearings have a problem, not CIH Edited by Sheep Herder 12/28/2016 21:59

bootheel of Missouri | Sheep Herder. You buy your openers from CIH because the Chinese bearing don't last 2 days in the CIH . Hope I read this wrong

Nw Ks | I bought 48 complete opening discs from Airseeder Guys last Dec. because they used Ingersol blades for 1770XP. Looked good and worked good till 2000 acres (85/row) then replaced 16 bearings. Neighbor had same problem. I went back with Deere bearings. After 3000 acres they measure 14 7/8" or more. Conclusion was good blades, Chinese bearings.

I edited it now. Thanks for pointing out my error. It's the Shoup bearings that don't stand up.

Central IL | new blades measure 15" and are recommended to be replaced at 14.5". If you go beyond that then you will see several issues including,
No experience on JD vs Shoup but your comment caught my eye on running openers oil 14"

south texas | Chickened out and went with local. Kml at 8.50. Have steel seal protection for bearings. Im finding more loose bearing in the housing vs failures. The 3.5mm disks seem to get 1.5-2" of contact if they are shimmed tight or loose. Im going by feel now. Shimming them till they slip with minimal effort.

We have had lots of trouble with the shoup bearing housings come apart from the blades. Some shoup parts are good, but some have been junk....
