west central ohio | After looking for a good used spreader with no luck I am leaning towards a new one. Salesman says double chain and hydraulic speed/clean adjustment is the only way to go...but about 1600.00 more. Have been renting a similar one with single chain and rope pull adj just fine. Spreading 1-6 month old beef pen pack. Worth the extra coin?? Spreader will last me 20 years I hope.

northeastern Ohio | I have one with a double chain and hyd drive. There is still a rope pull on the hyd drive to adjust the speed, but you can set it to full open and use the scv control to set speed from the tractor (I cut the rope off and use the tractor control). My previous NH spreader had the regular drive system. Really not that hard to pull the rope and adjust the speed. I never had any problems with either system. My previous NH spreader had the single chain. Again, I had no problems. But I've seen spreaders with broken chains and bent slats. The double chain should be better in this regard. So I guess if I was buying again, I would spring for the double chain, but save my money on the hyd drive.

western iowa,by Denison | really happy with knights-they make a 1140 model-double beater-2 web,all hyd drive that just works day after day-with it being a touch higher in the air -I also thinks that helps-and hyd drive you can speed up or slow it down If shopping for new I would really look into that brand-my neighbor recently bought a 3 beater model like this one-he loads it with a skid loader, he had a 185 new Holland -it is a 1159-in same shape as this one in picture-$15,000-he was concerned about the size-but is happy camper now the second picture is a 1140-they are asking $12,000 it will hold same or maybe 1 scoop short of a 195-we use to run 1140 spreaders custom manure hauling until I started hauling farther-we normally did 1,000 loads a year Edited by garvo 12/22/2016 07:35 (img (Small).jpg) (img-1140 spreader.jpg) Attachments ---------------- img (Small).jpg (58KB - 278 downloads) img-1140 spreader.jpg (42KB - 333 downloads)

Sioux County, NWIA | No real preference one way or the other on the web drive, hydraulic would probably be less trouble on the long run. For the web, no way I would order a double web. I've run both and the single is less trouble. The doubles are more finicky about adjustment and will allow frozen material to build up on the box sides and push the web sideways. The links and slats in a double web are lighter than the parts in a single web. Just my opinion, but I would order as a single, with out the web in, and have a local welding shop make a web for it. They make something heavier than New Holland offers.

The desert of south central neb | This is what we have so far don't have any complaints yet have had it 2 years so far. Way better spreader than the 540 international we were using. http://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/104300...

north-central Indiana west of Fulton | Had a Gehl 1410 which is the same as a NH 195 with single web chain and rope pull for 7 years. No problems but had soupier manure and went to a Slinger. Prefured the single web chain over the double we had on an IH 595 for 7 years in the 80s, 90s. Simpler and quicker to shorten the web. Don't like the pintle chain though, a real pain to get to the connecting links and take out a link. Much preferred the t- bar type chains on the 595 and the CaseIH 1580 single chain web spreader we had in between the 595 and the Gehl. We had only a single beater, but we didn't haul much bedded....you probably need a double beater.

western iowa,by Denison | theres nothing complicated about a double web-they are running the same strength chain as a single-I hate t-bar-the other chain is easy to fix-and you can be forgiving on tightness-the t bar seemed to always cause bent slats-usually 2 more bolts to tighten on the double web-

Lynd Minnesota | I really like my double chain and hyd drive . Mine has a cylinder mounted where the rope assemble would be that allows you to set your apron speed .. I would have a hard time going away from that Edit to add pictures.... it a little dirty but you can get an idea of how it's done Edited by kneedeep 12/22/2016 13:09 (IMG_0124.PNG) (IMG_0125.JPG) Attachments ---------------- IMG_0124.PNG (217KB - 453 downloads) IMG_0125.JPG (115KB - 324 downloads)

SE SD | I bought a cylinder the right legnth and rigged it up myself for speed control. Was alot cheaper than buying the kit. Worked flawlessly last fall and is better for a cab tractor than a rope. Edited by Red Cows 12/22/2016 13:44

Sunnyside, WA | We had NH 195 spreaders with double chain and no hydraulic drive. I would want the double floor chain. Hydraulic drive is no big deal. Make sure you get the upper beater. Personally, I would buy a Hagedorn hydrapush. Vertical beater if you can afford it.

Hyd drive is nice because you can run the apron without running the beater when cleaning out.

Badger State | You can do that with mechanical drive and pull rope.

Badger State | I wish I had hydraulic drive

I guess I should have been more clear on what i meant by that. One can climb into the spreader from the front to clean out without having the pto shaft running. Edited by sparrell 12/22/2016 16:50

I bought a brand new Knight 1140 spreader this fall. It has the double apron chain and hydraulic drive. So far I really like it. I would recommend getting hydraulic drive for the apron, this is my first spreader with it and wouldn't go back. I looked at the 195 and this spreader and thought they were both good but knight dealer was willing to cut a good deal.

I've been running a single chain rope pull for years and see no reason to ever change. I've got a slop gate which is sure nice though.

NE NE | We use the West Point Design spreaders. They have large tires and pull fairly easy for their size(22T). Big diameter tires roll much easier. The push is much more a factor in our hills.
