if you think stuff sells cheap there the watch auctiontime.

i have always felt things sell fairly well on that site unless i am selling, and the crazy fees they charge to sell things just further prove that. i believe they have the no buy back policy on their side to make and keep them popular.

I've bought and sold on Bid Iron before and the only complaint I have is they sometimes charge sales. I've never been charged sales tax at a farm auction so I don't understand why they have to do it. Cost me $1,000 on a bulldozer I bought.

You can fill out the sales tax exempt form and they will wave the tax. Most sales I have gone to the past few years are now charging sales tax or have to have the form on file.

Indian Territory

I have bought two different items off Big Iron in the last six months, one in Nebraska and one in Missouri.
Both were in better than described condition. The farmers that consigned the items were good to work with
for I had to let both sit for a couple of weeks before I could go get them.

Big Iron's office was really good to communicate with, very friendly and pleasurable to talk to. Way different than
the "Wave". That bunch has soured me and I won't even open their auctions anymore.

first experience was good, like how they give you a pretty good assessment of the condition of the piece. 2nd took forever to get the sales tax refunded.

I've always filled out the tax exempt form but on a couple of items I still had to pay. Was not successful on getting it refunded either.

In Indiana you pay sales tax on all construction equipment whether it is for farm use or not.

I wont open big iron-------------after having reps out and out lie about condition of equipment and do out and out deceptive practices in several areas of the USA I am done. Neighbor sold some stuff I knew still had liens on it and I asked how that worked and his statement was big iron paid the liens off and he signed the titles over to them. That makes them a dealer in the eyes of the state of CO and they are blatantly breaking the laws of the state. I have no more use for them........

It clearly states on each item that this is what the owner states and you need to make your own inspection.

You can talk to the owner but you should really look at it yourself. What is good condition to some might be junk to others. Just like buying anything, auction or not

Buying thru them ive had good luck except on the sales tax they're always on the side of trying to make you pay it no matter what, looks to me like when you sign the paper saying it is for farm use it would put your own butt on the line not theirs, but overall ok on buying side, selling thru them has been absolute nightmare with the fees they charge and keep your money forever before they send it to you, thats a lot of money setting in their accounts this time of year,I've used them for the last time on the sell side, like Del Peterson auction much better to sell thru, just my 2 cents from personal experience

Bought some local things thru them. I've know them since they started in the late 80's with their auction and have always treated me good. That said, you need inspect what you are buying and buy at your own risk, they are just the vehicle conducting the sale.

If you are comparing prices to what dealers want, then yes, stuff is cheap on Big Iron....dealers are totally smoking weed right now...

Big iron does a lien search on everything that sells, (they may not always find the liens but they try)the items they can't get a release for are pulled before they list them,

Auction time has no lien searchs on anything they sell! Buyer beware if you buy from them and there is a lien and someone comes looking for their money or the item,, wife works at the main big iron office here,, she does lien and title work,. In the last 12 months or so there have been quite a few trying to sell without disclosing the liens,,,.

Every thing I have sold I wanted the bad shown in the pictures but they wouldn't do it even at my isnsitance. And I totally understand I should look myself but when a item is 400 miles away and they hide the bad in the pictures deliberately the drive is a waste. The simple question I have asked on all the items I have inquired about as well as bought is WILL IT DOT AT THE LOCAL SHOP THAT DOES THIS------------Then you drive and it isn't even close to passing a dot to get the junk home.

I have had people call the rep on cattle trailers I have sold and they have been lied to-------------Why pay the rep if he doesnt do his job. I want all my stuff to have the flaws disclosed even if it costs me $$$.

Same thing for me also. Bought a dozer last year and they said thet had to charge sales tax on construction equipment even though it will be used on the farm. They would not back down. My tax accountant took care of it

Have sold and bought through them, no complaints. My rep told me if he didn't take pics to show the bad and the good he could lose his job. Never had an issue with the sales tax, sent them the exempt form before i paid for the item.

I have bought a few items off Big Iron, my best one is my 83 Gleaner L3, very nice shape, well represented.

Worst one was dad bought some harrows. The rep was the consignor of the item. Pre-sale, it was perfectly fine to let it sit for a month or two, as it was well out of the way. Pickup time comes, and he doesnt even recall he sold any harrows. We must not have been the only ones, as that rep has been fired.

Also lost a toolbar, different rep "claimed" he told the main office to call us to remind us. Never got a call from anyone.

Some stuff was not represented well at all, but we bid very low, and so we still come out fine on junk.

So basically it boils down to:

Who the rep is
Who the seller is
What the item condition is
How much you are willing to lose on the item if "percieved" condition does not match actual.

If I may make a comment to those comparing BigIron and Auctiontime.....

Big Iron is operated by a real auction company, with a long standing reputation to uphold. Most great auctioneers go above and beyond to make sure both buyers and sellers are happy if there are any issues.

Auctiontime is simply another EBay style website started by a dealer magazine with no real auction experience represented by sales reps with no auction experience and in many cases no farming experience.

Its your choice who you buy and sell with.
