SC Wisconsin | A new Holland 195 spreader is on a local auction next month, I thought about maybe bidding on it. Looks in decent shape, but I've never used one. I've hauled a few loads working for a neighbor a long time ago with a 185 and they seem way simpler than my dad's knight box spreader, although maybe not quite as heavy built. I would like a little bigger spreader like the 195 as I haul a pretty good distance sometimes. I thought about looking for a knight slinger but I'm mainly bedpack. Just wondering how others like theirs and anything to watch out for.

Redickville, Ont | Had one forever. Switch to tubeline vertical spreader now but 195 is a good spreader. Still have it dealer wouldn't give us much for it. Make sure it's single apron chain. Neighbour had double apron chain and it was a pain to keep them tracking right. One side would stretch more than other. We use to borrow it and they would borrow ours when we needed to spread in a hurry.

Central Saskatchewan Canada | I have a 195 and I would disagree on the single chain. We have a double chain and wouldn't get anything else. They are a good spreader. I've had it for 5 years and haul about 300 loads a year with it. (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (141KB - 259 downloads)

SC Wisconsin | Well maybe if you actually filled it up you wouldn't have to haul so many loads haha

Sioux County, NWIA | Over all the 195 is a very good spreader. Reliable and a good spread pattern. Make sure the walking tandem tube is greased well. Bad things happen if they are not. The bearing on the big beater opposite the gear box is too light (flange housing) and will eventually fail. Replace with a pillow block. The two speed for the web needs to be adjusted properly, but it is reliable once adjusted. Don't ever let the web get much slack in it, especially if it is a double web. I have run both double and single web and very much prefer a good single web.

sw MN | What gives the new Holland such a good spread pattern for a horizontal beater?

western iowa,by Denison | my neighbors run a 185 and 195-some little things that go wrong -they also seem to hang to low to the ground- we use to run 1040 knight spreaders and then a 1140 knight-they have some things perfected that the new Holland didn't- the double chain in the knight really solved a lot of problems the 1040 had-normal was 1,000 loads a year until we got bigger spreaders-the 185 and 195 spreaders of the neighbors seem to rust faster then the Kuhn knights. What size is your Dads spreader? Is it a box spreader or slinger? Lot of helpful information on knight spreader's on line Auctions seem nuts on manure spreaders we really like double beaters Edited by garvo 11/27/2016 04:23

Lancaster County, Pa. | I just bought a used 195. Overall I like it. Some things I saw on the 195's I looked at...... -make sure the top cover is not rusted thru on the beater drive gearbox. I looked at one spreader where water ran out of the gearbox when I pulled the check plug. -crawl underneath and check how rusty the cross members are. I found some spreaders that didn't look too bad until I crawled underneath and found more rust than steel. -check the bottom of the sides. They tend to rust/wear thru right down next to the floor. -If the web is worn bad be aware that a new web on the single web model will run you somewhere around.$2200.

Sioux County, NWIA | I can't explain why but compared to other horizontal beater spreaders the pattern is more consistent and the spread will extend beside the width of the box some. The top beater is definitely a plus on the 195s but I have removed them on occasion when spreading large frozen chunks.

NW Illinois Stephenson county | I had a NH 190 for about 10 years. GREASE the apron shaft both side religiously or the bearings freeze to the shaft and then the bearings rotate (bad deal). Keep the apron tight! or else it will catch or else it will slip a drive tooth or two on one side or another. I held my breath every time I started to unload a big pen packed load. If the apron drive sprockets get real worn they will wrap the apron around the sprocket and shear a bolt if you are lucky. If the dealer never took the part that is supposed to slip and cover it liberally with never-seize, after the shear bolt breaks it will be frozen and break many expensive parts. (called experience) I went through 4 aprons hauling one load every day plus cleaning sheds maybe 70+ loads a year. I really liked the plastic floor. I sold it for $600. The new owner put a web in it and fixed the apron return slides (they were wore/rusted out). He uses it seasonally and is happy with it. I mostly liked the spreader, but if you use it long enough like I did these are the potential problems. Good luck! Edited by Jim Dandy 11/27/2016 17:12

Columbia City, Indiana | I have an H&S 370 I bought new in spring 2013, I like it except that it seems to break a lot of sheer bolts on the gear that runs the web. It's not that hard to fix and it's usually my fault when I brake one I think. Seems like it's a similar spreader to the NH 195. When I was looking there had been several threads on here where people seemed down on the NH models, don't know if I just imagined that or those posters are gone now, seem to be mostly positive opinions on the 195's anymore. To guys who have ran both, which do you like better?

I bought a used 195 over 10 years ago and have hauled lots of manure with it since. Only real problem we've had was 2 years ago output shaft from the gear box stripped out where it goes into the lower beater. NH has a repair for that, so it can be fixed. Only other problem was cylinders on the slop gate started leaking. Had dealer put in new kits and they work fine but if I had to do it again I'd just get new cylinders. Not much difference in price. I've got the single chain, never had trouble, just keep it adjusted.
