Southern IL Randolph County
This is the lift cylinder on an 80-61 swing hopper. I had a light drip from this port after it had been in the raised position at the bin for about a week. I also installed a new inline ball valve as we knew it was no good and bleeding off, but fixed that and now oil is appearing from the cylinder. Any thoughts on this fix if anything. This auger was bought used so I don't know if the previous owner had an issue. Never seen this on our other Westfields and one is 20 yrs old. Thanks

The piston seal is leaking. Mostly caused because the cylinder
is a one way cylinder. The open end of the cylinder is exposed
to weather / moisture and gets rust in it. We had one freeze in
the up position and took some time to get it down. We sucked
ATF oil in the top end of the cylinder and made sure we raised
it up past our needed height so it would not ruts again. So far
so good.
Probably have to replace seal.

Ours did the same thing this year and was just barely leaking down. I went to lift auger one more time so I could build a stop for it and the packing blew out. I totally agree with it being a one way cylinder and condensation rust the upper part of barrel. Some folks on here say to cycle the auger all way up and down before storage.

What these others said is correct. Was told they couldn't be fixed, so bought a new one. $1,600 ouch! We ended up rebuilding the old one in case we should ever need it. Probably should just sell it if you think it's worth the try. Email is good if you're interested.

We used to have a 10-61 and 10-71. Had that problem regularly. Westfield fixed ours once or twice IIRC. Problem was as others described. Finally got tired of that and went to Farm Kings when we needed to go to 13" augers.

I've got a 13x74 that has done that since new. When you raise it up after it has settled does it blow oil out that vent? I figured it was the o-ring on the piston but after looking at it decided it was easier to hit the raise lever everyday when it is up instead of trying to wrestle with a cylinder that looks to weigh 3 or 4 hundred pounds.

I have a 10x81 Westfield also that has a two way cylinder. It can't settle because of this problem because it already has oil on both sides of the cylinder. I'm wondering if the one ways can be converted to a two way?

I have been buying westfield augers at auctions that have leaky cylinders, and many have the whole end blown off from when the vent plugs up.

No one wants to fix them, they just get another one. But they are simple to remove and then any good hydraulic shop can rebuild them.
