I have some dirt work to do. Some of it is pushing a lot dirt and gravel but I also have levelling to do. Seems like the dozer blade would be better for levelling but can I get pretty close with a track loader? Seems like loaders are more plentiful and cheaper. Thanks

I have only ran dozers so my grading ability is based on that. For me nothing can grade like a blade but if you have a lot of dirt to move a loader may be a better choice, IMO though if you need to move the dirt a decent distance see if you can rent a scraper from a neighbor, much better for moving longer distances.

I've ran both. Grew up on a track loader. Now we have a dozer with a 13' blade. A finish dozer with a 6 way glad won't move dirt long distance. It'll roll off the sides. I can take a hi lift, or track loader, and level just as good as a dozer can. Might take a little more time, but it's definitely doable.

A track loader will do some of everything, including level. It's all what you get used to running. My first piece of dirt equipment was a track loader. Now I have a dozer, excavator, and scraper. Track loader is more universal then all others. I did several building pads with track loader and tractor box scraper.

We have a D-8H dozer and a JD644 wheel loader . I think its easier to level with the cat and it will push more dirt buts its twice as many horsepower. The wheel loader will do the same job just slower and you have to dump the bucket . I really like the loader for small jobs and being a wheel loader its easier to  get to the jobsite. I really do not care for a track loader because it has all the disadvantges of both type machines, unless you are doing demolition work.

Track loader is a lot more versatile in the long run. Sort of a jack of all trades but master of none. Dozer can just push material around. Now it does depend on how much work you have for it and how long you intend to keep it but givin the choice I'd get the track loaded. We're on our second one now.

Need a U-blade on a dozer if leveling land and pushing very far. Lot more track also in loose dirt. If digging ditches and loading, loader. I had a 977 Cat with a side dump bucket for this, dig a lot of ditch and dike, quickly....James

I used this guy to dig out my shop, level a spot for a machine shed, make a road, and take out a tree line. Very versatile.
