I saw an add in the classified for plastic round bale feeders. I went back later to check them out but can't find the add. Has anyone had any experience with these? Is more than one company building them? How do they last? I'm really tired of replacing these thin metal rings that are sold as bale feeders. Thanks.

we have 2 or 3 of those. Would not buy any thing else. One even flew 1/2 mile in a tornado got it out of a tree and it is still here used a bit. One thing I like about them they are easier to raise up out of old hay. Keep in mind we feed very little hay in feeders except in a lot or maybe for supplement of cover crops. Ours are I think 4 inch pvc fairly heavy I think sch 40 thickness.

Century bale feeders. I probably have at least 30. They hold up better then anything I've ever used. They are also much easier to pickup and move.

We've got some, not sure what brand but I think cattle waste more hay with the plastic than metal. I really don't like any type of hay feeders but sometimes you gotta have em.

If you add the bar and skirt kits they waste very little. I only use half the bars so make one bar kit do two feeders.

What does one of these feeders set up like this run? I've only seen the bare bones models around here, and they seemed pretty pricey... But if they last 4 times longer than a metal ring, might be worth the investment.

They are expensive. I can't remember right off hand what the skirt and bar kits cost. Seems like maybe $110 but that might not be right. The average skirted metal ring lasts me 3 years. My oldest plastic ones are probably 7-8 years and still going strong. I've had a couple break a rail but they make a kit you slide over to fix them. We feed everything with trucks with balebeds here and we really abuse these feeders. I would never go back to metal feeders. I haven't bought any metal feeders in several years but if guess these cost double of what the light duty metal ones cost. I don't see any reason they will wear out though.

Of course my local supplier doesn't offer those kits.

I found a couple old underground fuel tanks seven foot round. Salvage yard cut them into four ft high rings. Then I welded iron on them so they had to eat out of four slots . I also cut a notch so where they were eating it is only three ft high so they can reach all the hay. Will never rust away and can beat on them when frozen in and not worry about busting them up.

On the plastic bale feed rings, do you always put the ring over a bale or can you drop a bale into the ring which is the way I like to do it?

I've found the 2 piece (rather than 3 pc) Applegate rings are cost effective, fairly light to move and hold up reasonably well loaded as I do by dropping a bale into the ring.

Who makes that one SWSCT? That's the best looking "stock" version of those rings I've ever seen.

that looks like the 2 I have got both from MFA in Macon Mo. they had to get them from the state ware house. Mine do not have the ring not really need as the up and down pieces pretty much keep hay in. High priced so might not being made any more.

I have some of the century but agree that there is a little more waste with them than an applegate type. The do last and don't rust and are light though. I don't feed much hay in rings either.

No experience with plastic, we ended our bale ring issues when we got a feeder for this outfit. http://www.customhayfeeders.com/ Made of sch 40 pipe, but if your not within reasonable distance of Ohio it won't help you much.

We use a lot of Century bale feeders, easy to move very long lasting. using some of their bull feeders with slash bars. not much waste.

I've had a group of them since winter of 2013/14, so this is the beginning of winter #4 with them, and you can't tell any of them from new.  Local place where I get them are around $240/240 today, about the same as I paid then.  Will never go back to anything else.  They hardly ever freeze to the ground, because they are so light, they are always shifting a little as the cattle eat through them.  The days of a small calf getting pinned under a hay ring?  Over.  They just squirm right out from under it.  I don't have the curved verticals, mine are just I believe three narrow rings toward the bottom and an upper ring, with 5 or 6 vertical tubes attaching them.  I abuse them with a loader and they just spring right back to round.  Thought I had a pic on my phone but can't find it at the moment.  Found a one on the net that looks almost identical.

I need to talk this over with my cows. Somehow they manage to wiggle and break the hardware. I have gone to tieing the joints with number nine wire. Tightening the bolts just collapsed the pipe. Could be trying to feed too many cows at the same time. They can be a might boisterous at times.

Maybe put out another ring or two to keep the pressure down?  I dunno.  You got me there.

A 46" or 50" tractor tire with one bead cut out makes a pretty good feeder. They fit my budget and look right at home on my farm too.
