Just turned 6000 hrs. No visible leaks externally. Not seeing any coolant from water pump weep hole. Think it must be burning it. What are the possibilities? Head gasket? Cylinder liner?
Wondering if I should open it up or just keep it topped off and watch it. Nothing in the oil when I drain it. Thanks for your thoughts

How much coolant is it using? What color is the exhaust smoke? Could be a head gasket, but also it will send compression into the radiator. Sometimes you can take the overflow hose and put it into a bucket of water and you can see the bubbles. The evaporator/heating core could leak thats in the top of the cab but you would see coolant on the floor if the drains are clean.

I had mine leak where the hoses go up the side of the cab. Might be worth a look.

No white smoke in exhaust. It has always ran very clean. I hadn't thought about heater core.
Thanks

Send a oil  sample in for peace of mind..

I had a 4455 we oh'ed using JD overhaul kit losing  antifreeze,,,, pin hole in a liner.. Cost me a bunch, JD didn't give a damm because it was  6-7 years after we did the OH before we ruined the engine.

Pressurize the cooling system is the first thing I would do.

An oil sample is a good idea. The last time I saw this problem, it was a cracked head. Hopefully not the case here.

Did you expect JD to do something about it after 6 years? That's a much longer period of time than the original warranty.

PP weld on liner.  the tractor lost a little antifreeze from the time of the OH. Never could find it until it locked up & we tore it down.  I'll damm  sure look close at any new liners after that.  Didn't think JD's QC was that bad.   I should of sent a oil sample in on that tractor.

Small leaks in radiators are sometimes very hard to find. Just replaced the radiator in my 4455. Patrick

My 4250 started loosing coolant this fall during harvest. Same deal.... couldn't find any external leaks and the exhaust showed nothing odd..... and this thing was going through several gallons a day. Harvest was winding down, so I loosened the radiator cap and it didn't loose any more coolant. Haven't looked into it, yet, and I doubt the cap is my problem, but I've got my fingers crossed.

X2 on the radiator....I went through that with my 4440 for a couple years, just kept topping it up thinking it was going to require replacing the head gasket at a minimum. Finally took the hood off and put a pressure tester on the radiator and found the leak in about 30 seconds. It was up in the top of the core where its hard to see with the hood on. It never leaked enough with the engine off for me to see it before.

I had a water pump seal go out and the water was going in the oil so slow that it would burn out and the oil looked ok you could not tell water was going in oil that was on a 4450 with 6500 hrs on it so that's where I would start.

I was told by JD mechanic it's important to keep that weep hole open so the leak goes out not in
