Subject: Wanting to build no till drill

I am looking to build myself a smaller NO till drill. Looking for something around the 6ft range. Has anyone attempted at building their own? I have a few things in mind. Hoping someone out there has done something similar.

I have looked really hard at this a few different ways. My current plan is to mount a set of wavy coulters at say 6" spacing on a toolbar and mount my 8 ft brillion behind it to keep them in the ground.

A toolbar, a few of these Dawn interseeder openers and a small Valmar air box and you would be in business. http://www.dawnbiologic.com/duoseed/

Great Plains, Truax and some others have had small no-till drills on the market for a long time.

Here are some other no-till openers made in Canada that might be less expensive than the Dawn units. http://www.khartindustries.com/opener.html

Those dawn units look great except 5 of them would probably cost what 15k?

Get yourself a worn out 12-15 foot drill, and cut it in half. I just sold a 14' Tye drill this summer for a couple thousand. If you'd buy one cheap like that, most of the work would be done, and you'd have plenty of spare parts.

There are several companies that built 6-10 ft no-till drills. Tye, Marliss, Haybuster, United Farm Tools, Sukup, John Deere . . . ..

For the money, should consider on of the brands above. Not-till's need weight and good openers to work. Why reinvent the wheel, when you should be able to pick up a used "built" one and go from there ?

I built one from half of a 15 ft older Great Plains and as said had lots of extra parts left over. Only paid 300.00 for it and after a complete rebuild had around 2500.00 in it. Much less than the 13,000 for a new one. I don't farm lots of acres so it works great for me. It was a year long part time project that turned out better than I expected.

Someone already builds one commercially.

TG Schmiser builds a 6'no till drill. Their market is primarily towards vineyards and orchards.

Thanks for the pricing link. There was a guy here trying to sell used Dawn strip till row units for 5000$ each, I thought it seemed high.
