Subject: Mack 5 speed question

Dad and I bought a 1975 Mack r model. It has the 5 speed and the transmission has an aluminum housing. We are planning on pulling a dump trailer so we put together a wet kit. Got the pto from a salvage yard and we had a direct mount pump from a truck we parted out. Plumbed it up and now we can't get the trailer to do anything. Does the pto turn opposite from a fuller ?

The five speed I drove years ago if I remember right had an air selector on top that had reverse neutral and forward. The selector had to be in neutral but in a gear to get the pto to turn. This may be completely different from what you have but it was strange that the truck had 5 speeds in forward reverse and pto. This probably doesn't help but first thought I had about a mack pto.

Does the transmission have 2 shift levers?

Don't know about rotation but these guys are talking about old twin sticks some how u had to have one in gear for it to work.
I'm not sure rotation will matter just reverse your hoses maybe ??????

Is it a 5 speed with a single stick? Or does it have two sticks? If it has two sticks then it is actually a 6 speed which has 5 direct gears, Low Low, and 5 reverses. If it has two sticks leave the left stick in neutral and the main box select 1-5 for PTO speed, but you must have the 1 through 5 stick in a gear for the PTO to operate (again while your range or compound selector is in neutral). You can use 1 - 5 and it will speed up or slow down the PTO based on the gear selection.

Again this is all hinging on you having a 6 speed and not a true 5 speed.

The 78 that I use has a 2 stick that the left stick (1-5 gears) has to be in neutral and the right stick has to be in low or high range for it to work.
There is an air cylinder underneath the tranny that turns it on and off.

Gee I posted about that truck earlier I drove. Yes yer right I forgot about the neighbor farmer has one just like your talking two sticks one in gear the other in pto or something. All I know is i got to the bunk and couldn't get to dump for about 10 min.

I'm not sure like a previous post says it would matter if it turns in reverse. It would most likely make your controls backwards maybe???

first make sure the pto is turning. As others said a double stick will need range selector in neutral, transmission in any gear suitable to lift. Does it have a pto shaft? If so the output from pump will most likely have two shafts out the back side. One turns one way the other opposite if memory serves. Can hook to either one if going wrong way.

It's a single stick 5 speed. We put a airshift pto on and direct mount pump so we can't see its turning. You can hear it grind a little when flipping the switch if the clutch isn't pushed down all the way.

I have a 72 Mack and if I remember correctly you have to put the extra gear in between the transmision and the pto to make it turn the right way. Hope this helps

Ok that helps. The pto has the extra gear so it should be turning the right way. It maybe a pump problem then.

Thanks for all the replies. We figured out the pump was turning backwards and we ended up ordering a new pump.

Did you need the adapter housing with the extra gear for clearance? If not you could just remove it and the pump will turn the right direction.
