Looking for a better machine to handle corn stalks. I cut them first. Seen this advertised for $8500. Is it good? What would it take in hp to pull it ?

527 or 530? Does it have lead shanks? Cover boards? What size points? What type of soil? How deep? To answer the hp question, 175-300. Some of the early machines are getting pretty worn out, they do a nice job for the price.

A 530 with lead shanks will pull pretty hard here if you run it fairly deep 11"+. They do a good job ripping things up but don't level all that well, it helps if you add a harrow or basket behind the closing disks. Hp wise I'd want 300+ here in heavy soils to get enough speed to turn things over well. For the price it's not a bad way to go, but check it over well it's getting some age on it. Not really a fan of the individual disk blade setup on those as if you start having bearing issues the $ starts to add up fast but it's worth looking at.

I had one, pulled it with a TG255 (dyno'd at 230 pto), did fine for the most part, but had its hands full at times. Got rid of it because of soil conditions left after closing gang. Liked the Brillion Landcommander II job better with disc gang. It did well with stalks as well, and left a better finish after the fact.

Our 530 takes all of 350hp to pull 10" deep in S MN. The 730B we just got gives 425hp more than it can handle too.

The other thing I thought of was with the lead shanks it's more likely to plug if your stalks are in longer pieces. But they're not too hard to take off if there's trouble.

Have a 530b. No lead shanks. Pull It with a 350hp articulated 4wd. I have a lot of tough black dirt and it handles it well. Probably cant be beat for the money. If you do anything to the stalks ahead of it it will do a really nice job. If it has the disc leveler and you take time to adjust it, it will level adequately. I run the biggest tiger points. Im on the fence about the coverboards.

edit: it will run in 280 bpa stalks without a problem.
