southwest minnesota | Thought about asking this in machinery talk but decided to try here first. Is there a general rule of thumb for how much horse power you need to pull a manure tank of a certain size? i.e. horse power/gallon or horse power/1000 gallons? Im sure it depends on tank brand, disc covers/injection type, etc... but just wondering if there was any general rule as to how big of a tractor you would need.

As a rule of thumb, we recommend 1 hp per 36 us gallons in flat country and 1 hp per 30 gallons in hilly country. Plus another 5 hp per shank in the ground depending on what you have for a tool bar. If you are in hilly country look for a weight transfer options that lifts the front axle to put more weight on the tractor drawbar for more traction. I work for GEA Houle Manure equipment-we have a few dealers in your area. Courtland Waste Handling in Courtland, MN or Automated Waste Systems in Hull, IA would be good ones to talk with.

Ohio City Ohio | I would agree with poo solutions. No need to have 300 hp on 5000 gal tank. Like some guys will claim we run 7000 gal tank on 200 hp 2wheel drive here. Use to pull 6750 with 165 2 wheel worked good. FLAT ground and splasing on top here though. But if run out of traction it's to wet to be out there.

Same here ,we pulled nuhn 6,750 all the time with 7810 mfwd...we now use a Magnum 200 or 7830 on similar Husky spreader--pool table flat here

Lineville iowa | We run a mx285 on a Houle 6000 gallon works good. Have a lot of hills though. Really like Houle vs the blazers we had pulls smoother.

East Central Illinois. 39.346676, -87.653484 | I have pulled 6000(+/-) Houle with CIH 7130 2wd, it's a LOAD on the road, no problem in the field with 5 shank min til injector Also pulled a 6000 Balzer Vac with same 7130, even more of a load on the road. Now using a CIH 9330 with the Balzer tank, it's a great fit. Would prefer taller road gear but the 4wd feels much more stable, especially climbing and descending a few hills between hogs and field. That being said the recommendations from POO seem to be right on. I would advise running the cheapest machine you have on a manure wagon, for obvious reasons

WC Wisconsin | Don't mean to hijack the thread, but how deep do you guys inject with a knife bar, not the wide shoe/shovel? We are going about 7" and that seems deep to me. We pull a 5200 gal Jamesway with 5 shanks using a TG305 and have plenty of HP to spare unless we are on hills fully loaded.

St-Eugene, Ontario | Oh boy are these answers nat approved??!! I got flak last year for questioning a picture of a custom operator with a ~600 hp new holland on tracks pulling a 9000 gallon Houle tank. Not one person agreed with me that it was overkill lol. Around here there are a ton of 10 000 gallon and 12 000 gallon nuhn quads (around 15 in my area) and everyone seems to run 200-250 pto hp to pull them (200 hp on our 10 000 gallon) but we're in flat land and we all spread on top, very few tanks incorporate here. And these tanks have very good brakes. If you don't have brakes don't follow these instructions!

Sunnyside, WA | We ran a JD 8260R on a Houle 9500 with 10 row VTI. 75 hp Ekotune. Ordered a new 8295R to put on the tank. 8335R or 8310R is on the tank now (20160830_090138-800x450.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 20160830_090138-800x450.jpg (91KB - 246 downloads)
