Subject: Are Diamond C trailers any good? Is it true there are no bargains on used trailers?

I'm probably not doing anything anytime soon but we're bagging a lot more of our grain these days and logistically it would really help if I had a heavy gooseneck trailer that I could put a JD 4430 (with loader) and a grain bagger (or grain bag unloader) on. For the heck of it I called a local trailer dealer to see what they cost.

He said a 32' Diamond C with two 12,000# axles and a hydraulic dovetail would be $12,800.

Is that a good brand?

If I keep my eyes open on Ritchie Brothers, Big Iron and the like, am I likely to find any good values over the next year on something like that?

Biggest concern I have is if I were to do it I would either have to back the grain bagger on or the JD 4430 would be all the way at the front with the loader actually sitting on the goose neck hitch. Not sure a 1 ton pickup would like that much weight on it and I wonder if the trailer hitch would like that much weight that far forward either?

Before anyone gets too upset about being able to stop safely, this would be for gravel roads, just keeping up with combines and making it so that all the necessary equipment moves from field to field in one shot rather than having to make 2 trips. Probably 25 MPH the vast majority of the time with very few significant hills to worry about.

Anyway, I'd sure appreciate any thoughts on it. Just learning for now. Will probably take me a year or two to make up my mind:).

Thanks.

We like our Diamond C, have basically the same setup you're looking at, except our dove tail isn't hydraulic and we've got the 12,000# axles. Our 1 ton has no trouble pulling it loaded and if loaded right you can almost forget it's back there!

Anyways, we've had no issues with ours and was definitely worth the price new.

Used trailers are rarely worth it if you can afford new. Used owners typically think they are worth as much or more than a new one, or discount it less than the set of tires and brakes it needs would cost.

I bought a used 14k deck over about 5 years ago. I could't swing new so I compromised on a used that was not quite as big as I wanted. 5 years down the road I've done bearings, brakes, tires, misc other repairs and have more in it than a new one just the way I wanted it would have been. Interest on a loan to get exactly what I needed at that time looks cheap compared to what I've spent.

If you have a semi 13-15k can buy a lot of step decks or older lowboys and then you have some real hauling capacity.

Not sure on that brand,as they ar not popular here. But we have a hydraulic tail load trail brand trailer like you are talking about. It is very versatile with that hydraulic ramp. I can load my cabbed jd and batwing shredder and not overload my one ton pickup. The tail will pick up the shredder, which weighs about 5k I am guessing. Overall very happy with the trailer. Have had it about 4 years. Was about $16k if I remember right. Now more companies are making them so I am sure the price has dropped. I would recommend hydraulic brakes. Don't pull ours very far fast or often. Have an 18 wheeler we move most everything with.

From reading your previous posts on cost analysis for pickup trucks, you know how to run the numbers. I think that if the numbers are crunched, the new trailer makes the most sense.

We cant make the numbers come out for us on new pickups, but we can make the numbers jive on new trailers. For the cost of tires, brakes, lights, etc. and for what people will pay at an auction, new trailers look mighty attractive.

Things to keep in mind: PJ seems to be dropping in quality lately, lots of south of border sub-assembly with bird crap welds. Big Tex looks to be moving up in the quality, they started putting a box beam outer rail in, and now offer a low profile.

For stabilty and safety and re-sale, I think the lo-pro is the way to go.

IMO check out Logan Co. Imp. @ Oakley, and Midwest trailer out of Agra, and the Load trail dealer out of Leoti. Out of the 3, we have only dealt with Midwest, and got along good.

If you are going to Dairy Queen 57 miles east of Colby on I70, and during the trip pass by a trailer seller along the freeway, keep on driving IMO. We have a friend that deals with them, and gets screwed on every deal in some way. He keeps dealing with them, but IDK why.

For brands, IMO Load trail is looking good, as is Big Tex. IMO the Circle C or Circle M dont look quite as well engineered.

I also went to HHD and saw an interesting trailer. While it wont be light, a Midsota looked well designed and built like a tank.

I'd put it on a semi. We have pulled the biggest little mini excavator (18k) that kubota makes on a 36' pj gooseneck. Pickup was a tonner dodge dually and it handled it ok. The pickup and trailer empty are 17.5k lbs. That 4430 being so far forward would be a problem I would think. Lots of semis out there for 3 thousand bucks and they are built for it.

Thanks for the feedback. I should have written my quote info down but I'm pretty sure I was quoted 12,000# axles like yours, not 14,000# axles like I said. I have edited my post to reflect that.

Thanks again for sharing how yours has treated you.

Thanks. Your experience is what I'm afraid of. If I do buy one though, even after that post I bet I'll still try (and fail) to beat the odds:)

I've considered the semi route. Still not sure what to think of that. Most commonly available semi trailers would be pretty long for what I want to do but I would have extra room for tools and an air compressor at the field that way...

Are you saying that rather than stowing the dove tail, you hydraulically lift it just a little to pick your batwing up? Are they designed for that?

If so, that would make things easier for getting it balanced better. Thanks.

Thanks GM Guy. Always look for your posts.

I especially appreciate the brand reccomendations. I don't know enough about trailers to even know what brands to look at.

Thanks. I probably need to analyze that option further. Semis are good for the money until you have to put money in them to keep them going. I have one in the shop right now that broke down at an inconvenient time for me to be able to work on it. Hoping it doesn't get too expensive and at the moment I'm not sure I want another project like that. Might be the right course though.

I drive onto trailer far enough so shredder is completely on the tail.  Place tractor in park and lift tail with shredder sitting on it.  Otherwise I have way too much pin weight on pickup.  Works well.  Lifts shedder with ease.  Another side benefit to the hydro tail is if you have a flat no need for a jack, it will lift the trailer off the ground.
