Subject: Seed Corn Company History

Instead of tagging onto the other post about Crow's (which wandered a bit from the subject), let me start a new one on the history of the companies that were mentioned.  While some of the replies had some of the information correct, these are the facts:

  • Funk's G was owned by Funk Bros. based in Bloomington, IL.
  • Edward J. Funk and Sons (Don Funk is actually a grandson) was based in Kentland, IN. and sold SuperCrost brand seed.
  • There was no relation between these two companies or their founding families.
  • The Golden Harvest partners were all associate growers for Funk's G until they broke away in 1972 after the company went public.
  • In 1974 Funk's G was bought by Ciba-Geigy.
  • ICI bought Garst Seed Co. in 1985.
  • SuperCrost was sold to British Petroleum (BP) in 1986.
  • ICI bought Supercrost in 1990 and merged them with Garst under the ICI name one year later.
  • ICI spun off its agricultural interest under the Zeneca name in 1993, and by 1995 the Garst brand had returned to their seed business.
  • Funk's G became CIBA Seeds in 1993.
  • With the merger of Sandoz (owners of Northrup King) and Ciba in 1995, the two brands were merged under the current NK brand and owned by the new company named Novartis.
  • Don Funk re-entered the seeds business about that time with DEF Seeds, then bought Midwest Seed Genetics in 1999 and formed ChannelBio.
  • Garst Seed Co. was now held under the Advanta group (partially Zeneca).
  • Syngenta was formed by the merger of Novartis and Zeneca in 2001 and NK remains their seed brand, but not Garst.
  • Crow's was bought by Channel the same year.
  • In 2004, Garst and Golden Harvest are bought by Syngenta (Monsanto was the contending bidder) and join NK as the current seed brands under Syngenta Seeds.
  • A few months later Channel was purchased by Monsanto, and in 2005 NC+ was purchased by Monsanto and rolled into Channel.
  • Today, Channel consists of Midwest Seed, Crow's and NC+ brands.
  • Some seed brands have disappeared (like DEF, Wilson, and others) through these transactions.

This is just a fraction of the mergers and acquisitions that have taken place in the seed industry over the past few decades - no doubt there will be more in the future.

Walnut Grove MN USA
I wasn't aware that Funks G and Funks were two different companies, hence my confusion, learn something new everyday here. Dad used to plant a lot of Supercrost, a company way ahead of their time in matching corn to ground. I'm still thinking the people that created Crows or maybe it was one of the other Channel Bio companies owned Supercrost or were involved in it at one time. I think they sold Supercrost and 5 years or so later formed a new company. I just can't quite place the name and it was a man and woman, don't know if husband and wife or brother/sister or just two people working together. Doesn't matter that much now gotta try cut some beans.
