Subject: Replacing sickle and guards with Shoup parts?

Strasburg, ND
I have a John Deere 635F. I bought a sickle kit and guard kit from Shoup. It was about $1,900 cheaper then using Deere parts. As I am putting them on I am wondering if I made a mistake? Has anyone used shoups guards? Do they last as long as Deere's? Do they break easier? I have no reason to be concerned other then I didn't ask others for their experience first.

Shoup guards are fine i use them. I was ordering complete sickles for our 630F and quit because a deere will last 3-4 times as long before it breaks.

We have no complaints about their guards, but didn't have good luck with their complete knife. Went back to JD's knife but the cost is still hard to swallow!

I would stick with the JD parts on this one. I have used shoup sections in the past and they do not last as long as the JD ones. The guards can have two different grades so be careful there. Most of the time shoup has decent parts, just have to watch out every once in awhile on certain items.

I have bought lots of stuff from shoup and been very happy. BUT, I ordered guards for my 499 mower from them. When they showed up they were dull, and even had pitting under the paint on the cutting edge. Sent them back. I've bought guards there before that were great quality. So, hopefully a bad batch, but now there's a kernal of doubt in my mind.

I shoup has great parts. but I tried shoup guards on an I.H. bean head They got dull on 1/3 the acres as the I.H. ones. This was probably 10 yr's ago. They probably ate better now. But I am not ready to find out.

I run the sickle sections from shoup and have had really good luck with them one time made a sickle up 1/2 shoup and 1/2 JD sections could not tell the difference in cut quality and all got dull at the same time, now guards on the other had I buy JD one got some from shoup one time and like someone else said were dull from new however I see they how make a HD guard so maybe they are better and maybe I got some from a bad batch, I never sent them back just used them as replacement when I had a broken one towards the end of useful life on the rest of the guards.
