Subject: 540 PTO conversion for an 8830 Ford

I gather from the thread that I can convert my 8830 to accept a 540 pto shaft and then I gues I can use either 540 or 1000 pto shafts? Does anyone have the parts #'s or know where to get the parts to do so? From what I read here it sound like an easy conversion just need some directions.

I did my 8830 a few years ago. I got the parts from Worthington Tractor Parts. I don't have the part Numbers, but they are the same 540 gear set, used in the TW5 to 8730 Ford. You get a bottom gear to replace the spacer, and a double gear for the top, that replaces the single gear on the top shaft.
The 540 stub shaft is the same one used in the 7710 on up. Also need to change a bearing on the top gear.
It is a fairly simple job.
Joe

Thanks I will check with Worthington. Does anyone have instructions or a parts diagram for this conversion.

You have to drain the rear end; unpin and remove the swing drawbar. There is a plate under the backend that comes off. this is where you remove, and insert the gears. The center link cap comes off ( where you pull the drive shaft, to replace the top gearset. And I believe that you have to pull the pto shaft housing.
There is a parts diagram at" Messick's" Tractor site.
Not really a hard Job. pretty straight forward. I paid $550 for the parts 9 years ago.
Good Luck

Do NOT run excessive power through that 540 shaft, or you'll tear stuff up - very expensive stuff.

Pic from Messicks website. http://www.messicks.com/nh/52785 see edit below It's not as complicated as it looks. Drain trans oil. Remove cover on bottom of trans. Remove pto shaft. Remove pto bearing retainer and 1000 rpm gear and spacer will fall out. Keep track of flat washer spacer things. Install 540 gear in place of spacer. Kind of tricky to get everything up in there. Remove three point mount which is the upper pto bearing retainer. Remove pto gear with only one gear on it replace with pto gear with two gears on it. You will need no. 41 540 gear, no. 35 540/1000 rpm gear and no. 40 540 shaft. And maybe no. 49 gasket and maybe a gasket for cover on bottom of trans. I did my tw 35 probably ten years ago so my memory is a little foggy. Very worth while conversion. I change mine 540 to 1000 a half dozen times a year. Changed it today, from 540 round baler to 1000 sprayer pump. Takes longer to find a pair of pliers the right shape to fit the snap ring than it does to change the shaft. You can park it front down hill if you want to minimize fluid loss but I never do. On level ground I can change the shaft fast enough that I only loose a quarter cup of fluid. I used parts out of a TW 20 so I think that would be an option as well. At the time the tractor salvage place said the gears were getting hard to come by. New is expensive. edit link doesn't take you directly to pic. click on link then click transmission, click pto clutch valve shaft and related parts

I have a brand new 540 shaft that I was going to use on my Tw35
When I bought it they said it had 540/1000 it was 1000 only .
I have since sold the tractor , so no longer need the shaft .
