Zillah WA | We are in between hay cuttings so I decided to come out and help a buddy of mine with mint harvest today. My question is for you guys that run pull type choppers. What pto Rpms do you run these choppers at? I hopped in it and took off and they had the tractor pegged all the way at 2200 engine rpm and the pto was spinning at 1150. Is it hard on them to run that fast? I always shoot to run our stuff at 1020-1030 rpm at the pto. Tractor is a 7230r if that matters.

South East SD | Yep tractor wide open. When chopping in the field I don't let pto rps drop much below 1000.

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | irethanolman - 7/3/2016 14:58 Please tell us a little about mint harvest. It smells great. The guys that bought my 6710 grow mint. I went to help get it running when they first started out with it. Having all the chopping done right under your nose in a SP is a little overpowering at first, but you get used to it. I got home that evening and my wife commented on how good I smelled. She's never said that before or since.

Sunnyside, WA | Be glad that you can get it that fast. We have an 8310R tuned to 360 on a NH FP240 and can only get the pto speed to 1050 rpm wide open no load. It would be nice to run faster so it would blow better. We can work the tractor pretty good if we push it. Mint harvest is in full swing here in Sunnyside. Smells great. We just finished 3rd cutting alfalfa. I will say that mint is hard on wear parts in choppers. Our chopper is a 2009 model that chopper mint until 2014. Amazing what we had replaced. Very abrasive, or a lot of dirt

Zillah WA | It's very abrasive. These choppers get rebuilt every winter.

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | Why are there still so many PT machines in light of how cheap SP's have become? Wear parts in a SP last way longer. If you're rebuilding the PT that often it sounds like there is enough to do to run a cheaper SP.

Sunnyside, WA | I don't want to deal with ano the engine and transmission. If I buy a SP, then I'm chopping corn and triticale also

Zillah WA | Only one person around here uses a SP for mint. I think most guys use pull types because they don't have a ton of acres of mint. Also most guys don't have mint stills big enough to stay ahead of SP harvesters. My buddy does have a lot of acres but they have just always used pull types. Works well for them.
