Humeston, IA
Why do some gooseneck livestock trailers have a canvas top while most are metal? Cheaper? Be able to haul the occasional giraffe? Thanks!

South Texas
There is metal under the canvas, at least here. The canvas is there so the metal under it rusts out and you come back for another trailer.

Canvas doesn't rust and isn't as heavy.

A lot of tarp tops here, cooler, lighter, cattle load better.

It's kinda a Oklahoma trailer thing, along with a rodeo thing. Dugan and Gooseneck were/are brands. We had one for 20-25 years, no canvas top, just bar top. Cattle won't load better in any other trailer.

We never put the canvas on our trailers- only short trips so the sun isn't an issue. We always carried it with us in case we break down. Then when we sell the trailer we have a nice shiny top to put on it. I like it uncovered, the rain washes it out regularly and the floor keeps better.

Most all trailers around here are canvas. I don't own any and don't like them but they are a lot cooler.

Most all steel trailers here 24ft and over are canvas. More than half the 20ft trailers are. Load up and pull a 32 with a steel top then hook on a canvas loaded. No comparison. Tarps will last 10 years or more and definitely way cooler

Wet the canvas down and you have air conditioning.

id like to have a canvas top trailer but have never been able to find one that isnt rear dual gates instead of one solid gate with a slam latch. Ive never had a trailer with double rear gates but they sure look unsafe compared to a single.

I think you would like the dual rear gates.can be swung open to close the gap when loading

thats true, just seems unsafe having to latch the gates together instead of being able to just slam the gate from a little bit of a distance

Oklahoma Panhandle
Some of them have slam latches on the double doors. Each door latches individually and then the other latch between the two is more of a safety and reinforcement.

Id like to check into which brands those are, ill be in the market for a new trailer in the next year or so and it seems like you can get a bigger bar top trailer for the same money as a full top.

I love my dual gates on my Gooseneck brand trailer. My is 24 foot long and pipe sides.
I like the fact when you back up to a loading area (barn or pen) , you can close up the gaps on each side of the trailer when you open your gates.
I would not have a single swing gate trailer, you got to back up perfect to load each time to not leave any gaps for cattle to get out from.

and I'm just the opposite. I will never have suicide gates on a trailer.
