I want a bigger tractor for tillage and it looks like 4wd are the best bang for the buck in used. 250 hp would be enough. Sticking with JD because of superior parts and service in my area so looking at a 9100 or 9120 with 5000-8000 hrs. What concerns me is how well the 8.1 l engine holds up at higher hours compared to the 12.5 l engine in the 9200 or 9220. Although I don't need the hp the bigger tractors aren't that much more money. Which is the better engine at higher hours?

Strathcona, mn | I cna t answer about the engines but when those tractors first came out I worked for a farmer who bought a 9100 brand new. It was a gutless wonder. It was only on the farm for 2 years before it left.

East central South Dakota | Not sure where you are or if you're interested but I know a guy with an 8570 with 4800 hours for sale. 275 hp not quite a 9200 but a nice tractor nonetheless

Delphi,IN | If you are only going to use it for tillage, I would go with a bigger bareback. No point paying for the 3pt and pto that might be on a smaller one.

Wisconsin | Our last tillage tractor was a 9120. It pulled a 24' chisel and a 29' disk ok. Don't know about the engines long term, but I can say I would stick with the 20 series just for the powershift trans.

Southern IN | Versatile.

Sunburst Montana | I also vote 20 series for the powershift. I would also vote for the bigger engine and maybe a 9320. Always go bigger then what you think you need. It will come in handy some day. Plus it is nice to only have to run the engine at 1,800 to 1,900 rpms.

Don't know about the deere tractors but been reading on here about water pump failures and also driveline issues. Be sure to check on those. Some on here can tell you about those. That can get real expensive fast Edited by RDH 5/24/2016 18:24

Illinois | Have a 9120 that replaced a turned up 4960. It will outrun the 4960 hands down. Has plenty of power, gets good fuel economy and has never had a sick day. It has less hours than the tractors you are looking at. I remember a mechanic saying that the last year the 9120s had more power. I don't know if that's true but it feels like it

waterloo iowa | The 12.5 block can always be turned up if you want more power, not real sure how high the 8.1 can go.There are 10 year old generators with thousands and thousands of hours on them with 12.5 power,if you could see the components side by side the 12.5 would look pretty impressive. Not sure if Deere went to the 13.5 just for emissions, but the 12.5 was sound

Northeast Nebraska | Definitely want a 9X20 series for the powershift trans. The last thing on earth I would base my decision on is "too much horsepower." Find one that the price is right on and buy it.

South central Ks. | If your going to use it for tillage work, I would go with a 24 sp. Lot better gear selection. We have a 9360R with power shift and 3 others with 24 sp, for tillage work the 24 is hands down a better trans.

SESD | I have a 9100 with 3500hrs. Good solid tractor. Nothing wrong with the 24sp for tillage. Powershift would be nice for other jobs like cart or planting. I use mine on air drill and powershift would be handy. I might be interested in selling after this spring if you might be interested. Mines a bareback.

Iowa | Anyone I've talked to that has had one with the 8.1 says not enough motor in the 4WD we love them in the 8000 though. I would go with the 12.5 we have had ours since new has 6600 hrs now have put o rings in the injector cups replaced fan bearings and replaced water pump a year ago just for cheap insurance. Some went back to put a second fuel filter on but was told that was only done for those that complained not a full recall on all tractors. The 12.5 is supposed to be a 15,000 hr motor

Central KS | I would stick with the 12.5. I also would stick with 9xxx series or newer. Nothing wrong with 70 series tractors, but the cabs on the 9xxx and newer was greatly improved. Can't go wrong with 24sp or powershift. I have had both, as well as a 12 speed in a 9300. My preference is the powershift..

Chappell, NE | I would also go with a larger model and a bare back if you are just going to use it for tillage. We have owned two 9200's, a 9220, a 9230, and a 9410R. Water pumps have been a common issue on all of them, except the new one of course, as well as bearings in the differentials that go out and start making a mess and become a problem.
