We are looking at a used 5455 Massey tractor and wondering what guys think of them. It has the 2 range with the 2 speed powershift in each gear. Also has the power shuttle. Can the power shuttle be used without the clutch? Can the powershift be used without the clutch. It has the 4.4 liter perkins are they good starters in the cold? Overall descent tractors?

Is the shuttle lever a big lever beside the dash, or a small lever on the steering column?

My 5455 has the big lever, which is a mechanical synchronized shuttle that you have to clutch. It's also a dry clutch, with a four speed, high and low range, and a hi-lo power shift (they call it a speed shift). Mine is the cheapest version of that tractor. With the small lever, it should have a wet clutch, and I think you can shuttle it without the clutch. I'm not completely sure on that. The dry clutch in mine is somewhat touchy, but I have gotten used to it. The tractors are very solid, and a little over built for their size. The three point will lift 9000 pounds at the ball ends and 7000 pounds 24" back. Others on this site say the transmission is good for 150 hp. The 5465 is pretty much the same tractor with a six cylinder engine. The cab has plenty of room, ac works good, buddy seat has more leg room than a JD. It's fairly easy to service. Mine has never let me down in 2300 hours. The two speed power shift (speedshift) can be used without the clutch, but it shifts so fast and harsh, I don't use it in high gear on the road. Works great in the field.

I had a 5445 Massey for 10 years. It was a great tractor My tractor had the shuttle shift that could be used without the clutch and you also could shift 2 range without using the clutch. I believe you would be happy with the Massey. I did trade for a John Deere 6115M. No problems with the Massey Ferguson just wanted to try a Deere. I really can't compare the 2 tractors since I went up 30 more horsepower with the Deere. As far as the Perkins goes it is a great motor. Massey has changed to the Sisu in their new tractors.

You are describing my 5455. I like it, biggest issue is bottom of clutch switches and blower fan resistors. Why they took years to sort out a good replacement part for those two items I'll never know. The transmission is known as the speedshift.

Yes the powershuttle is a powershuttle. Old ones its a pain to adjust the reverser aggressiveness, its a series of key turns and shifter movements. Newer models have a dial you turn.

The 2 speed powershift is a powershift yes, but don't downshift it under load going downhill, there is a warning sticker on the door about it.

The 2 range is a robotic synchronized range change, you need to clutch and the computer will block the range change if you are going too fast for the sync. I tend to stop if going down into low but it will pop into high easily leaving a field.

The engine starts well in the cold, -30 C if needed. Its not labelled well but preheat is on the key, it took me a couple of years before I figured out I hadn't been activating it.

Strong hitch on them. Get the blue switch on the console model if you can with the high flow pumps. It has 540 /1000 pto but some also have shiftable 540/1000/eco.

The dyna4 partial powershift is the best transmission offered in this model if you can find it. Every so often you find one with the ccls hydraulics option too which is nice.

We have a 5460, 10 yrs old with just over 3000hrs, very few problems and all of those were minor. Although, just this week I lost the digital readout for pto and ground speeds, I'm sure it's nothing too complicated.
Ours is the Dyna-4 so I can't comment on the speedshift.
Starts really well in cold temps. Overall, has been a great tractor.

The transmission was one of my concerns, but we went ahead and bought it, it only has 250 hours on it and looks like new for a 2005.
