Looking at trading up to a 1200 planter, what are the pro and cons of a pivot compared to a stacker. I like the idea of the bulk fill and being able to work on the planter at stand up height. Is the 1200 series a dependable planter? Has electrical issues been a problem?

We've owned a 1200 12/23 for 5 years now. It's a 2005 model and it was pretty nice when we got it, replaced all the wear parts but you have to do that anyways. Never had an electrical issue, ours is hydraulic drive (4 section control), replaced all the motors 2 years ago as one started to pulsate a little. I would like to get air bag down pressure for it but that requires a complete rebuild of the parallel linkages so am holding off on that one for another year or so.

Bulk fill is nice, we use the bulk tanks for dry fertilizer in corn, and can do 70-80 acres with beans if you pack it right full.

The only thing we really changed on it is replace the main frame tires with wider ones to help flotation. Everything else is pretty much factory setup.

Not sure what you're planting with now. If coming from a cyclo then the 1200 is a much more complicated system. Not that it is hard to learn or run, just because the cyclo planters were so darn simple.

I have no experience with a stacker, but have had a couple pivot planters (both 16/31). The pivot planters are a pretty good setup. Only complaint I can think of it all the weight on the 4 tires when you pick up the bar.

The 1200 planters are loaded with electronics that work pretty well in general. But like anything with electronics, things can and will fail. There may be some time with a tech out scratching his head for a while.

Having said that I think the 1200 series planters are a superior planter that is worth any headaches that may come with it.

Our 1200 12/23 has around 14000 acres on it. We just finished putting new openers and closing discs on the full planter.

After putting on the wide rubber on transport wheels it is a dream to use!

To help more we should know what you are using now....
Comparing the old 1200 to our newer (2013) John deere 1770 the case is WAY more user friendly. The Case meter is easier to set (along with whole planter).

We would have a Case planter but they don't offer dry fertilizer on anything over 8 rows. Had not so great experience trying to blow fertilizer so that's what steered us away from that system.

We upgraded from 7000 to a 1200 pivot 16-30 with Hyd drive. I really like the planter. Have not had to hook up to the rotary hoe since we changed! Not familiar with stacker bar, but pivot has not been an issue. We did change pivot bushings this summer though. I used to work on about 50 Deere planters a year, really got tired of working on my knees. 1200 fully raised is a dream to check seed tubes or work on lower units. Takes 2 people 2 hours to replace all opening discs on 16 row. We have an '08 with manual tongue, rest would have Hyd cyl in tongue. Hyd would be nice, but something else to fix. We fill bulk fill with a 8000# lift telehandler. We drop seed through a scale platform we got from Central City Scale, works great. Pro 600/700 monitor takes a little time to get comfortable with, but when you do, it controls planter very well.

what tires did you put on that are wider than factory ones. do you have any pictures of your wider tires we love our planter but flotation is what we need more of especially this year

I agree with the others. The 1200 pivot planters are extremely underrated IMO. I've had mine for several seasons with very few issues. Some people say I need to upgrade, but I see no reason to. I replace the disc openers, shoes, and firming points every 2-3 years. I no till most of my beans with only residue managers. The hydraulic drive is nice and bulk fill is the only way I'll go. It's nice to be able to run the planter with the tether cord. I feel the biggest downfall of them is the weight. They are heavy and will sink down in soft ground conditions. But, all newer planters are heavy, too.

Great planters! They are heavy and they require more hydraulics and a bit more horse.

We have a 16 row 30 in 1200 pivot and get along real well. As stated so easy to work on and transport but yes they can be a boat anchor in mud. Ours is a 2008 and about 11,000 acres, no electrical problems. It is all hydraulic from tractor , 245 Magnum with 46 gal. standard pump and it handles both fans and all lifting quite well.

Is fertilizer through the bulk tanks something that was an intended use or was that something you made work on your own?
