not sure about DMI's except I can tell you there are alot of them sitting in pastures and cattle lots around here.

I think they started using metric bottoms when the 3710's came out, mabey sooner. We just bought ours so I have not been able to plow with it yet but it looks like it will be a good plow. Plenty of steel and easy to work on. There are alot of guys around here that use these.

I almost bought new DMI variable width plow in 1971 but after talking to a couple guys that had them I bought a IH 710 instead. Main complaint on the DMIs that I heard was that they were hard pulling, that a 5 bottom would pull about like most company's 6 bottoms when set to the same width.

If you pay more that $100 per bottom, or more than scrap price, you pd too much. I saw a pristine DMI 5-bottom variable go for less than $600.

central - east central Minnesota -

DMI were good solid plows - the comment about them pulling hard was because they stayed at the depth set and didn't ride out of the ground like the other MFG's plows at the time. They were heavy, but pulled lightly If set correctly, they acturally pulled (drafted) easier then other mfg's plows. I switch my DMI over to CaseIH earthen metal parts. Worked good. They do have very poor resale value.

I love seeing these pictures. We still have one of the six bottom versions sitting out back at the farm. Pulled it with a 7080 AC back when we lived in Claremont, MN. Had a five bottom that we pulled with a 7050 AC that we traded years ago. Now that we live in Texas, last 31 years, we need all the residue to keep ground from blowing. Thanks for sharing and would love to see more.

Never have seen a Variable plow with 10 bottoms.
I assume your CAT would be up to the task...?

Chebanse, IL.....

The only JD plow (mounted) we had were the old F145. However, we had 3 of the DMI Hydra-Wide plows. A 7btm, 5btm, & 4btm. They were good plows. In the early '90s you couldn't give one away here. Now, however, they're picking up value again...and not for scrap price. They're being put back to use. I never thought I'd see it, but plows are coming back to some fields "here".

Nice pictures Ron.

I know what your talking about, plows are actually starting to come back around here also.  Kind of funny really.  We switched and will not be going back to the disk ripper anytime soon.

We had a 9 bottom pulled with 875 Versy. Handled good, did too good of a job covering 'trash'. Sold it after too many years for $5000. It cost a bunch more than that new and was in 'new shape'.

Neighbor has, or at least had, a DMI 11 btm hydra-wide.  He pulled it with an 8960, so I'd expect the 8850 or 95E would pull it, at least some of the time.  The 88 will pull 8-16's at 6.5 mph until steel starts to break.  7 btm DMI is all the 35(wannabe 55) will handle in our soils.

It would. 9 and 10 bottom DMI were very common in the 70s. They have 5 bottoms on the front frame and 4 or 5 on the rear.

I don't have it any longer or use a plow. I converted it over to CaseIH 720 plow bottom parts. If I remember correctly, they bolt right up. If I remember correctly, White or Oliver parts work on them also. As indicated, they were heavy plows, but if adjusted correctly, pulled as easy as Oliver/white plows (which were know for pulling easy and plowing good).

That Kinze built the first blue plows and sold the patent to DMI? We found that out this morning in the showroom at Kinze.

Kinzebaw (sp?)  made the vari-plow first but later sold it to DMI just like you said.  In fact if you go online you might be able to find the patent.

Just curious, do they have a history board in the showroom or something like that?  Just wondering I've never been there.

Yes they do. Pictures, models, and audio with push buttons. You really need to go see their showroom, out in front by the check in here sign. Their sale is Saturday, tomorrow. I took pictures there for more than an hour yesterday while the youngsters went and ate dinner.

It takes up a lot of room in the barn. Its the berrys for plowing in washes and building channels and ridges besides being the best plow I ever pulled. Do you have the guy's ph no in Auburn?

Thanks

Do you think you could post some pictures please?  I don't think we'll make it out there tomorrow.

 Thanks.
