Subject: JD 4240 Air Conditioner issue/question

Last year I had the AC unit on my 4240 recharged. I am still on the old R112 system, but the AC mechanic that did the recharge used a hybrid to 112 since you can get R112 anymore. When the tractor and AC unit are cool (like sitting over night), the AC works good until the compressor gets warm then it quits putting out cold air. The clutch starts and stops with the switch in the cab like normal. It did the same thing last year as well and I had the mechanic come out a second time and he hooked his gauges up and said everything is working as it should. He did replace the JD superheat fuse and he put in a 15 amp automotive fuse and that did help from it blowing so many fuses. The 15 amp fuse is not blown.

I have also noticed that when the sun is out and its warm the cool air does not last as long. If its a cloudy overcast day and its not super warm out I seem to get longer out of the AC unit.

My question is, where would be the next place to look for a root cause?

Dearfield Co.
you need to find out which bastard gas he used. I would guess it was a 134 blend from what you are saying and the levels arent right. Some of these replacements are nothing more than creators of black death within the system

Should also add virgin r12 is available if you want to pay for it. All of my reefer unit repair guys seem to have some on hand.

My 4240 and 4430 have been converted to 134a. When the sun is out, especially mid afternoon, they can't keep up with the solar effect the glass causes. Gets warm in the cab until you climb out for a few minutes and then get back in, feels "ok" but not great. Unfortunately, the AC in the older outfits aren't as efficient as the newer machines.

I agree with you on the efficiency, but when I have the AC on there is not any cool air coming out of the vent. I would think something should come out!?

Throw that aftermarket junk out and use 12 or 134a. You can get a 12 system to cool good with a 134a conversion if you replace all the needed parts. I have tried one system with crap imitation and get no cooling so I won't use that crap anymore.

I put a 134a kit from shoup on my 4240 3 years ago. Got gauges and vac from eBay and a pig tank from Orielly Auto parts. Have about 700 or 800 in the whole deal I think and it will freeze you out.

I had a similar situation with a 4430 and a 7700 combine. Turned out the cab heater temperature control was not closing off the coolant flow to the heater core. The air conditioner worked fine idling but shortly after heading down the field it would start blowing hot air. You can test this by clamping off the heater hose with a couple of flat irons and a vice grip. Very well may not be your situation, but cheap and easy to check.

Yes, I do get air flow, but it is warm air like the AC is not even on. I used the tractor yesterday afternoon and it was a cloudy and overcast and it did not seem to have any issues with the AC, it blew cold air. I tried something different and ran the AC knob selector all the way on the max setting, where before I only had the knob on turned about a quarter of the way. With it being cloudy and overcast the air was almost too cool.

Thanks for all the replies, I will check the heather valve to see if that is the issue.
