NCSD | Lots of moving parts on those. Check all sheet metal... behind knives, around blower fan, spout. anywhere the silage rubs. check cross auger..those get sharp easily. check paddles on fan..they like to crack stick your head down the spout.. check for holes in the spout liner. of course knives and shear bar but they are easy to change smooth roll! check smooth roll and scraper. if it is not adjusted frequently, it will wear out scraper then wear out roll...those aren't cheap either! other than all the moving parts included they are a good machine...HA! I'll sell you one for a parts machine too...

100 miles north of the NYC crapper | Excellent choppers in their day but most are or near 40 years old now. IMO they were better than the model that replaced them ie 892. I would look for a 900. +1 on stuff to check above

I have a couple of them, I think there about 25% the machine that a 900 is. The biggest problem with them is the reverser gearbox, IF the parts are available it's about $2500 (plus labor) to rebuild one. If you even consider buying one drain some oil out of it (they use ATF) and make sure it doesn't smell burnt. I also much prefer the sharpening system, and metal detector on the 900. Just my 2 cents

sewi | If i was in your shoes I'd look for a 900. Lots of aftermarket parts. I really lucked out I found one on a retirement auction for 3100 it had new knives and was "gone thru" by the local dealership. Paid 1600 for the 824 corn head, came with the hay head. It sucks your coming in season here, so everyone and their brother is looking along with you.
