We need a row crop unit for the spring, never had a T here before. Any insight on a 5000hr 8400T would be greatly appreciated.

Would be used to pull 3pt strip freshener, 40ft planter, 42ft roller, 750bu grain cart.

If you are a JD customer wrapped up in the concept of better re-sale, do NOT overpay for one, they are not worth as much as their wheeled bretheren. I watched a fair condition 97 or 98 8300T with poor tracks sell for 22K. last week.

Do not put a dozer blade on one, I have pics of what happens, hard to hide it when you have to drag it off the road backwards, and I just happened to have my camera that day. :) Poor guy, rumor has it the dealer warned him to not do it too, but he did it anyways. It broke the engine block and the transmission case, so it likely went to a salvage yard. On that note, all challengers have frames, and to my knowledge have no issues with blades. :)

We never owned one and never will, just pointing out the two things I know. past that, I dont know much. :)

Check the front idler for cracking around the hub. The tension cylinder also had a grease zerk on the 10 and 20 series near the idler. If that wasn't greased well it will seize and crack. Make sure the bogey wheels have oil in them. With any track tractor if they have been road ed alot with thin tracks you will tend to find cracks on different parts.

For what you listed it will be a good tractor. They should be fairly cheap to own and purchase now. Make sure the undercarriage is good and the rest of the tractor will be fine with minimal issues other than routine maintenance. Have owned a 2001 8410T for about 6 years now and love it. Run on the 3pt strip til, finisher, sprayer, and 550bu grain cart. Very good tractor for those operations in the field. It won't road very smooth, but once in the field it is very nice. Also, once the tracks get wet it won't turn worth a darn. Just need to be smart when driving them. We love our T and will likely add another to the fleet in the next couple years.

the pin & bushing at the bottom of the idler arm where it pivots when you retract the tension cylinder are usually bad the alignment mechanism also tends to seize up & some times the bogie carriage cracks other than that just the wheels cracking & any damage to the tracks they are smoother riding in the field & have a nice big foot print if the guides are scarred like the picture below it either has or has had an alignment problem

Our 8400T doesn't have enough oil flow to run fan on air seeder, and raise lower on the end.

I have owned a 1998 model for a little under a year.

I bought it from a farmer in Missouri who listed it in the NAT classifieds. (4200 hrs)

It needed tracks, but has been a great tractor for us, so far.

I likely paid a little to much, but it is very clean and appears to have been well maintained.

I would not be afraid of having another one on the farm in the future.

Thanks for the replies.

Some more specifics:

1997 model year
3855 hours
Newer undercarriage
Greenstar ready
Tracks in like new condition
Paint and interior in good condition

Dealer asking $70,000

Guy who traded it says strong running tractor, they had if for one year. Had low hydraulic pressure so will have to make sure that got fixed.

That is a better buy than what I made last year, and I have no regrets.

You might be able to get them to come down a ways on price, but if it suits your needs it should be agood tractor.

Here is a link to the one for 22K, not the cleanest one out there, but still pretty respectable.

So if a guy picked a respectable shape 8400 T or 8300 T that needed a set of tracks what are you looking at for price on tracks?

97 model? Unless you personally know the seller and can verify 3855 hrs, I'm betting it's more likely to have 13855 hrs beings it's 19yrs old. As for the market, I recently had a friend of mine buy an 8300 wheeled tractor for 28000 with about 12000 hrs and it's a good clean tractor. It was an outright buy off of dealers lot.

I can. Old guy down the road used it to plant corn, retired and rented land out to local bto, they used it to pull a 20' joker and sidedress, then traded it in. I called and he said he traded it for 62.
