Just curious if anyone has experiences with the old 90/94 series case 4wd tractors. I am somewhat, slowly starting an old J.I. Case collection and am kicking around the idea of restoring one of these old 4wds. How do the old Case 4wd's compare to the 2wd and mfwd versions? Were they pretty good pullers? Just how scarce are replacement parts? Thanks!

Had a 4890 which was purchased new on the farm and sold 6-7 years ago. When purchased new in 1980 and for awhile after there was nothing around that would out pull it. Used as our heavy tillage tractor along with a 14' Degelman blade we used for both small dirt work and silage packing. Parts were always available. Only had one instance we needed a fuel line for the scania engine the needed to come from overseas. Cannot compare to the 2wd case as we did not have any. Worst issue over time was when you had hydraulic issues in the steering system and the rears would wonder or stay just off center.

I have a 4494, parts are easy to get other than the electric steering, we did have to get the steering box rebuilt, as its no longer made, I think the steering potentiameters were spendy, but ours tested out fine. If your wanting as a collector the 8's would be cool with the big motor, but if you're gonna need to source parts and use regularly I'd look for a 46 -- my understanding is the "8's" were bigger and had different parts all around to hold up to more HP. I've had really good luck with mine, only downside is resale sucks, most dealers wont trade it in, people will offer 8-10k for a good solid tractor, so I threw a coat of paint on it and she's ready for show time. On mine the axles are standard eatons, -- so you basically have a Case 504, tranny, dropbox and powershift, hydraulic pump. We just replaced the PTO clutch packs -- what a pain, thats probably the worst thing, working inside the frame, fighting 20 hydraulic lines, then seeing if you can find your way back out to get the wrench you forgot.

Great old tractor we had two of them from the late eighties until 10 years ago. They will lose traction and spin out before they will lug down and lose power. Make sure all the knuckles get greased we greased ours daily. The engine may be getting difficult to find parts now these days. Power shift will cost 10 grand to repair if needed.

Scania engines are still used in some Deawoo/Doosan equipment . Not sure what parts would be like to find for the tractor engines of that time .

If collecting id opt for the 4994, very limited number made...400 horse. I think it was a V8 Scannia.

The Scania engine in the 4890 and 2870 feel like they could pull a train. Tremendous amount of torque from those tractors. They have a LOT of pulling power and are nice to operate when they're running good. Very nice cabs in them too.

Wow, awesome feedback guys! We run mostly all late model Deere equipment now, but back when I was a little kid we were all J.I. Case! They are the tractors that I first learned to drive, and spent countless hours sitting on the little 'shelf' behind the seat riding along with my dad. That's why I want to start collecting and restoring some. Currently, I have a 1270 and 2294. We never had a Case 4wd, but I'd definitely would like to add one to the collection. The 48's look so cool with that big hood scoop!! I also agree that having a 4994 would be cool due to the limited production. I really wish the new "Case" IH corporation would celebrate their J.I. Case Heritage a little bit instead of being so market heavy on the IH side of things. Versatile just came out with a new retro paint scheme celebrating their 50th anniversary. I think it would be so cool to see a new Magnum and Steiger painted with the Case 'Halloween' 94 series colors, Or even the old desert sunset (yellow) and power red paint scheme of the 60's and 70's.

We had a 2670 and then got a 4890, still have it for extra power, and weight for packing silage. They are good tractors, the rear steering will drive you nuts, ours has a mind of its own, don't you dare 1 hand the steering wheel going down the road. We did have an injector break off and rattle around that wrecked an engine, we put a 2870 motor in it and I think it's a little smaller. Ours came with straight pipe exhaust and purrs.
