Thinking about buying a new gooseneck trailer, 20k, thinking about 24' foot deck with ramps or electric tail. What brands to you guys like and what brand should we stay away from. Pj, elite, tow master, felling. Not looking at a big Tex.... Thank you

We have a PJ 24' bed with 3 ramps. It's a single wheel tandem. It's been a good trailer. Have had it for 3 years.

I have had my Feetneck since 2004. Probably has 300k miles on it. Has held up extremely well for me. I have never had any structural problems with it. Was a bit cheaper than a Big Tex when I bought it. Had the upgrades I wanted over a cheaper gooseneck.

Look into load trail.

IIRC back in the day the owners of PJ and load trail were business partners and had a fallout and went on their separate ways. consequently, there are alot of similarities, and IMO Load trail still looks to be better quality, AFAIK they dont have any sub-assembly plants south of the border in Mexico like PJ does. Hopefully PJ only makes frames for the smaller cheaper trailers in Mexico, but they could do the big goose's also.

I was not too impressed with Big Tex design 5 years ago, but it appears they are listening to customers and making changes. IIRC in 2014 or 2015 they went to a box beam outer rail, they now offer a lo-pro 14K (have had a lo-pro 20K for a while) and a few other things I like. They also have multiple factories, and one of them is pretty close to you in Caldwell Idaho, see if they offer tours to see if you like what you see.

We own some PJs, and the 07 is kind of a shoddy POS, but the 09 is quite a bit better. the design is nice, but the welds are pretty low grade, as are the axles and parts.

No matter what you do brand wise, sit down with the dealer and see if Dexters are optional. most trailers come standard with a cheap import axle, and Dexters are optional, a few actually run Dexters standard.

Also, look very hard at a Lo-Pro, most if not all major brands offer it. lower center of gravity makes a guy feel alot better with a tall load, and much easier to load something on the dovetail.

If you get a dovetail, look at the design, some the ramps are long and the top of the dove sits lower than the deck which gives a big hump to climb over, whereas others like PJ have shorter ramps and the top of the dove is flush with the deck. Not a big deal for a running tractor, but with a dead tractor it makes a huge difference.

Get the Low profile pierced frame style deck and get dexter axles. And make sure they have double hinge ramps . it keeps from raising truck and trailer off ground when loading

Another vote for Diamond C Fleetneck bought the 32ft hyd dovetail and jacks with remote , at times it seems too long but at 73years it sure beats lifting ramps and cranking . Its the low profile , wasn't the cheapest but it's worth it . I bought it two years ago , seems well built , I think the remote control is a must , when cold though seems like the tires are square that's the only thing I can find wrong .

They share a lot of similarities!  Including Zip Codes!!!  Straight from google!  Load Trail is right across the road to the north!

According to the dealer I get my trailers through PJ has began to use a primer prior to the powder coat process.  But this primer is an "extra".  Should be standard, I agree with you totally on the looks of a PJ after 2 years!

Seems to be a bunch of good trailers available for the masses. Very pleased with our Load Trail as it was custom built to our specs. I suggest you talk to a dealer about your uses and what options would be of value to you. Heavier frame members because it is in the pasture and dirt roads? Extra height on the hitch so you don't hit your head or crease the tailgate? Torque tube? Extra heavy axles that come with larger brakes and 17.5" tires? Have it built your way instead of just settle for what is on the lot.

6-8 years ago researched for a new bumper hitch (granted, not a gooseneck) and bought a Load Max/Load Trail, thought it was the most trailer for the money, been very happy with it, paint still good. only problem was should have bought it 20 years ago.

We bought a big Tex a couple years ago and have good luck with it. It's 23+5 I think. Has only 2 ramps and the center of the dove pops up to make flat. The nice thing I found out after purchase was that it has a lower deck height than others and a spread axle. The lower deck height has come in handy a few times, and the spread axle makes it pull very smooth. Most of the time it's pulled it is probably overloaded but would buy another next time.

Bought a new PJ in Dec of 2009. Owned it for 6 months and took it back. The paint was coming of like crazy. Order a new Corn Pro and it has been a great trailer.

Our PJ is a 2011 and it looks AWFUL! The only way I would ever get a PJ again would be if it were galvanized. I really don't think load trail trailers would be much better unless their process is much different, they are nearly identical to PJ. I'll just get one that is painted. not powdercoated.

one thing to make sure of is to not buy alco axles--we did-dual 12k axles and found out later the brake parts are frightfully expensive--the same capacity dexters are much more reasonable.also if your trailer is equipped with 12 in.diameter brakes DON'T get 16 in. tires. our trailer gets limited use so the wheels hadn't been off the hub in several years.the brake drums exterior rust had expanded enough to make a very difficult task to break them apart so we could install 8 new tires.this trailer should have been equipped with 225-70r-19.5 at the factory to avoid this.hope my experience saves someone else trouble.

I don't like my Big Tex at all. Supposed to be 20,000lbs trailer but 20K seems to overload it. Also lot of little things came apart on it.
