Subject: Dumb Question: JD Autosteer

I have a JD 9560RT track tractor with autosteer. I use Trimble and have trimble installed in the tractor.

Question is this: I have the Greenstar 3 display built into the tractor in the cab. It monitors RPM, fuel usage, and all of that stuff. I know that it can also be an interface for autosteer and that autosteer can also be run off of that cab display. So what do I need to just use that for autosteer? Do I just need a Starfire antenna or do I need more than that to run Deere autosteer? What kind of Starfire antenna would I need?

You need a Starfire ITC or Starfire 3000 and an autotrac activation ($3500) for the screen. An ITC will be fine for tillage and pretty cheap because most prefer the 3000 for more accurate work.

OK, thanks. The guy that had it before me had a 2630 hooked up in there. Do you think the tractor already has the unlock? Do you need the unlock to run the 2630 with autosteer?

Minimum Needed to Steer the Tractor
Autotrac Activation
ITC/3000 GPS Receiver

Or you could do this
2630 Display
Autotrac Activation
ITC/3000 GPS Receiver

Once the 2630 is installed it basically takes over control of the CanBus system in the tractor. The armrest display gives us the ability to autotrac without spending an arm and a leg on an extra display. However, the armrest display will not map totals. Basically just makes a blue coverage map of where you've been.
The armrest display and 2630 are actually different formats but the basis of their operation is the same. If you can get through one, you can more than likely get through the other.

If you're looking for an activation or a receiver, I have a guy I use. Call him at 217-474-9818, he will make you a deal.

Thanks, I'll check to see if I have the autotrac activation on there already. I can get it to get into the navigation screen but of course it doesn't work since there is no antenna hooked up. I'll see if I can get an ITC antenna from your guy and then I won't have to transfer my trimble stuff in and out of there when I need it in something else.

If the previous owner used a 2630 there most likely is not an autotrac activation on the armrest screen. It would have been on the 2630.

On that navigation screen, do you have a 'pie' showing up?  (See circled icon below).  If you have a valid activation for AutoTrac the pie will be there.  No Pie means no activation.  In that case the navigation screen is just there for guidance (mapping).

This is what I get: I am pretty sure I do not have the autotrac unlock.

If you don't see the AT pie next to the receiver status then you most likely don't have an activation, or at least not turned on, activation box checked. You can try going to GS3->Settings->Activate and see what show up there for activations. The commandarm displays usually have a demo with them (if it's not already used up) so could try that out if you can get your hands on a receiver.

If you do happen to find one piece of pie (an active SSU and AutoTrac activation) if may be that you have some DEMO time left. All R series came from the factory with 15 hours of demo, I'm pretty sure...

I checked my unlocks and no I do not have the unlock for autotrac but I do have 15 hrs. left on the demo. Still 15 hrs. left for pivotpro, rowsense and swath control as well.

Thanks for the help, I think I have all the info I need now. It's just frustrating since I was looking at getting my FMX and Nav II out of there to keep it in the combine full time figuring what the heck, I have the screen already in the armrest I should just need an antenna, but the cost of getting it all to work would be $3700 (used itc globe with used SF1 activation), which is almost the price of getting another used nav II with another used trimble screen such as a 750.

That $3000 activation can move to another Vehicle with a GS3 display in the future and is a much cleaner install than the Trimble. And that $3000 dollar activation doesn't depreciate in value, it's always worth the cost of purchase since it can be moved. Also, if upgrade that 9560RT to a 2014 or newer model it will have a Gen 4 display, which the autotrac activation is only $1000 but stays with the tractor. And if you want to move that Trimble system another JD vehicle, 2011 newer it will need a 3rd Party steering activation.
Besides, how long is Trimble going to be in the farmer market? I heard they have pulled all their Boths from Farm Shows except maybe the Louisville show. I hear CNH and Trimble are having issues, and CNH has thier own display, now a add on steering system from a different supplier, what's next?
At least you know that the Deere solution will work with Deere since Deere has and supports their own technology that they create and own.

OK, one more question. I found an 1800 screen that has the autotrac unlock for a little over $1000. If I were to buy that, would that work in a 9560RT? And better yet, could I transfer the activation for autotrac from that screen to my GS3 armrest console?

For that price, make sure it actually has the activation on there and the seller isn't misinformed. Mainly because that is around the price for a used 1800, with no activations.
No you won't be able to move the activation back and forth because an 1800 uses GS2 series activations where a command center display is GS3 series. You can upgrade the activation to a GS3 but then can't go back to the older series. But for that price you best bet might be to buy the 1800, take the activation off and upgrade it for the command center display, then sell the 1800 because it is the exact same thing as the command center display, just the older version essentially. Then if you got a 2630 down the road just move the activation over to it, they use GS3 activations, and you're good to go.

You were right. They took the activation off and didn't update the description in the posting.
