Center of the Universe, Huron County, Ontario. Can | Hi I'd like to purchase a one owner 6388. Looked at tractor. Represented very very accurately. Looks good, for a 32 year old tractor. Only real issue is TA is inoperative on low side. I've always liked the looks of them since a kid. I'd really add it to my " stable" , would look great along side same year 1460 I have ..... Anyhow, My questions are: What is the least $ it takes to install a TA? How many hours to do it ? Is it ok to operate w/o low side ? ( where did those failed pieces go ?) Looked online at Leamans , do I really need a new pump, updated clutch and spline when I'm in there ? ( wouldn't put 40 hours a year on it ) I'd like to do it right. Is this beyond the technical capability of one with a decent mechanical ability ? I called local IH dealer , initial reply from service writer was approx $3000.00 , then he called back and apologized after asking techs, said could be $18 000.00 That knocked the wind out of my sails... Just thought I'd get input from those that replaced T/A's in last couple years. Thanks Chris

owego ny | Not sure if ta are the same as the smaller tractors. New ta I just put in 790 pump 380 gasket kit 80 clutch 295 you should change pump with ta. Ipto shaft doesn't need to be changed unless it's getting sharp even then they are only 100 bucks.

Center of the Universe, Huron County, Ontario. Can | I understand , However, It's a hobby farm, Thus, There's a wider gap between actually needing vs want. If it puts a smile on my 10 year old sons face, makes memories for a lifetime for him. It's $ well spent in my books. Thanks though Regards, Chris

KY | Check with Hy Capacity for all the parts. High quality with a reasonable price.

swohio | Had a friend that had clutch work done on his 3788. Don't know how much it was, but don't think it was too bad. Not a t/a, but still don't think it will be anywhere close to 18,000. There is a nice shop around here that does great work and is cheaper than the dealer. May find one of those or can you do it your self with some help? I have a 3788 also and really like the tractor. I think the 6388 would do you well.

Thoughts from somebody who owned a really, really nice 6788 for a while. (Sometimes wish I still had it.) The TA, clutch, MCV job is not necessarily terrible or beyond the reach of shade tree mechanics. Splitting the 2+2 to do the work is going to require more time and effort than doing, say, a 1066 though.

Southeastern Tipton County, Indiana | One item that is different on a 2+2 is it does not have a pump mounted on the MCV, the oil is supplied by the external steering pump through the hose that is attached to the bottom of the MCV. There is a bypass block mounted to the MCV where the internal pump would have been. Scratch the expense of a new pump, if the tractor steers fine there is enough oil flow for the TA.

ecmn | Look into the aftermarket parts. Some of them have a pretty good warranty and lot cheaper than oem.

South Western Ontario, Canada | There is few places down here that might have parts. Guy nearby is rebuilding a 2+2 and knows his stuff if you run into trouble I can pass his info along. Those tractors are still on my list to spend a few hours in or buy someday when I'm rich and famous LOL.

Idaho | Well might not be the TA. Those if I recall were shifted electrically by moving the speed lever sideways. So it could be something very simple on the outside. Find a service manual and do some checking. I have a 33 that the TA has been out on the low side for a couple of years now. The way prices are it will be out for a couple more years!! Anyway I doubt your going to hurt anything if you do not get it fixed.
I did the TA myself in the 37 about 4 years ago now and seems like it was around $3000.00. It is not a bad job if you have the stands and time. Edited by IHC 1470 1/27/2016 10:37
