Center Valley Wisconsin | Got a 4455, 3200 original hours. Mfwd seals are still original and leaking. Is it a job I can do or do I need some jd special tools and a john deere tech school education. anything I should be awhere of, things that might jump out or stuff that comes apart hard. Seals are leaking on axle side and on planetary side. |

Montana | I would get a real good dealer with a real good mechanic because the seals take special tools and if the seals fail, the dealer can stand behind their work. I have a friend who worked for Deere and he said to get the dealer to do it rather than Him because the quality control of many seals are requiring dealers to do it over and they really do have special tools. MY dealer sent a mechanic to my place and we had tires off and fluid drained and my wife made him lunch. He did a great job and Deere can back his work.
Getting everything real clean and good help for the right Deere Technician is key. Just My Opinion and experience. |

Athens, Illinois | I did the seals on my 4455 MFWD myself. I don't remember needing any special tools. Print off the parts diagram and go for it. There is several seals in there. make sure you get them all. |

ecmn | lot of bull work. but a great project for a dyi guy to save money. cherry picker is a big help. do outer axle seals why your there.
before taking anything apart jack up the front and see if there is any slop up and down or wiggle in the kingpin bearings.
for the top and bottom caps I use a sharp chisel to get the cap started to come off, then get the pry bar under it.
use a parts diagram if you don't have the tech manual. the big seal drivers from deere make it a lot easier. but a jig saw and 1/2" thick aluminum plate and you can make your own.
I retighten bearings by feel, snug the ring up till bearings get tight, then loosen until you get slop then retighten to remove slop. test drive and feel for heat, |
