Subject: Cummins 504

Looking to possibly buy a BIG A floater with a cummins 504 engine. Is this a good engine or is it one of the cummins engines that had some issues. What issues were common.?
Thanks

Should be 505 8.3L...504 was the JI Case engine. Great engine. Case IH used them in all of the 71/72/89 series tractors and all of the combines from late 80s until 2006ish (I think). Not sure what year you are looking at, some of the early Magnum tractors had issues with the front cover leaking. There was an update to a reinforced front cover. Injectors can be an issue if they've never been changed. After a lot of time, they liked to get stuck in the head. Occasional exhaust manifold gasket which required the breaking of most of the manifold bolts. All in all though a really reliable engine.

So. Al.
That would be a v8 cummins 504 555 class some like them some don't. Probably hard to get parts.

You kind of missed the boat on that one. He is talking about a 504 V8 Cummins, a precursor to the 555 V8 Cummins.

Ah, never seen a 504 V8. Only V8 Cummins I've ever come across was the 903 (?) in an older Steiger.

In that case, disregard. I have no info on this engine!

We took a lot of them out, that were blown up and replaced them with 3208s in the day. Need an adapter to go from SAE 2 to SAE 3 bell housing. I don't even know were you would come up with parts for a 504. They were a high reving motor, and so were the 3208s. About the only engine you can replace them with, with out changing your gearing.

My dad had several Versatile 145 tractors that had the 504 in it.   They make good boat anchors and that's all.   High screaming, high RPM things that were unreliable in the long run.   Bore is bigger than the stroke on them as I recall.   3100 RPM going down the field.

My take on the 504-------------I never really knew of any that were 3000 rpm going thru the field . Most were turboed and 2100 rpm engines that were about as reliable as the 555. I farmed lots of years with a 555 and when it died it was time. the 504 T needs a fair amount of radiator due to the power they were trying to get for the displacement. The NA was ok in that area

I am sure that floater can't be all that expensive but the thing we saw the most out of that engine was the timing gear set up on the engine was a little higher failure rate with hydraulics running off the back of the motor. And OIL LEAKS, all the valley had thin sheet metal covers that dirt balls could vibrate around and wear holes in it. Parts are a little tough and my source sold out and the new owner doesnt want to mess with them

Also thought about the repower comments for a while-----------we never repowered any 504 floaters with any thing but did repower a bunch of them that had the FE for truck engines in them. I want to say they were 391s but can't remember for sure the displacement. But they got either the 3208 or the 504 or 555 what ever was available

I have a 145 with a reman 504 in it.  Tag says max rpm 2800 at 190 hp.  The original 470 was 180hp at 3,000 rpm.

I have one that came out of a mid 80's Dodge Motorhome chassis mated to a 4 speed Allision. Rated at 210 Hp. Converted/modified/cut and welded into a self propelled brush rake for pushing brush out of orchards. It has been reliable but if you need parts, they are hard to find/get.

Yeah, I noticed that too after I posted the pic. Was a really small pic and the only one I had. Maybe it was the same as a 504 with a couple of the cylinders chopped off.
