Subject: JD 7810: powershift vs. powerquad

I was talking with a mechanic in a JD dealership and the subject came up about transmissions in the JD 7800 and 7810 tractors. Said he thought the 16 speed powerquad was better than the 19 speed powershift. He said it wasn't a matter of reliablity, but that what the customers told him they preferred driving in the field.

That really supprised me, I figured the 19 speed powershift would be better in most situations. I have never driven either, so I dont know. What is the opinion of everyone out there on these transmissions?

Central Nebraska

I had a 7800 power shift and didn't care for it, four gears shifted very severe. I think it was fourth, eighth, twelveth and seventeenth. The rest were smooth, but those four were bad. I traded it on a 7810 IVT which I love.

I have a 6410 with the 16 speed Power Quad, and it is a nice transmission except there is always going to be a time when you're in the wrong range and have to clutch and shift two levers to change.

They don't make a power shift in the 7000 series anymore since the 10s.

I have the autoquad in our 7810 and like it. I never use the automatic shifting as I find it too jerky. We put an electric shift button on the end of the loader joystick in place of the grapple shift button and it's nice when doing loader work.

I have two 7800 with the pq. Never had a power shift. My Deere salesman made that comment too (pq is better thatn the ps). What really is nice is the 20 speed pq on my 7410 with a left hand reverser. Now that is a nice transmission.

We like our PQ 7810, no experience with the PS, but I've heard a guy say he'd be willing to pay extra for PQ over PS.

We have a powershift (1995) 7800, and it is jumpy in 3 or four gear changes, mostly from 18 to 19th gears. It's when your just about ready to shift it in to the last gear............................ and then theres and slight pause and then it jumps, know matter what I do. Idle back, "slip the clutch" , or wide open it still seems to jump!!

Other than that the tractor is real handy, and seems to run fine. But I would rather have a power quad if I could have another!!

Years back, when dad and I were looking to trade the 4450 powershift we managed to get 2 7800's on the place at the same time. 1 was PQ and the other PS. Had just had a snow storm so dad, the hired man and I took turns between the old tractor and the 2 hopefuls. Consensus was that the 19 spd PS was far more "jerky" than the 15 in the 4450. 5000 hrs later, the only work to the PQ has been some linkage issues this past winter. As I understand it, the 7810 PQ is all the better.

Have both on the farm, ps is like a woman during that special time of the month(very unpredictable), pq is always predictable and even tempered(you know what to expect ever time you change gears or direction) I would not buy another ps, no matter the price. I guess that would make the pq worth a lot more.

If you do buy a ps, make sure they throw in a pillow for keeping your head from hitting the windows. Maybe some prozac for your nerves too.

Only way to go is a 7810IVT. Great tractor and smoother than PQ or PS

I've had a 7810 PS sence '97 and love it. I've had 8 speeds 15 speeds and 16 speeds. The 19 beats them all but the 16 speed. It takes some getting use to but on a cart, planter and cultivator it works good for me. Its jumps are nothing like the old 8 speeds ( I still have one). It has a few jumps and they are bad if you don't let it warm up. I wouldn't be scared of a power shift they are nice and they haul ars down the road. The PQ dosn't unless it has E range.

does anyone go from forward to reverse without clutch? i've been told this is ok but growing up getting chewed out for tractor jumping I just can't make myself do it.

We've got the 24 sp PowerQuad with left hand reverser in our 6330. Very very nice trans with 30mph road speed. It's even got a button on the range lever that is the same a pushing the clutch down, along with the auto shift button and gear shift buttons.
