Subject: Deere or Shoup disk openers for JD XP units?

S WI
Need to replace the disk openers on my XP units. I have always put the Deere blades on in the past. Wondering if others have had good luck using Shoup replacements.

Wondering the same thing myself. Price for deere part number AA65248 is 41.95 and shoup replacement is 29.95. I would like to save the money if I can get the same acres on them. Is there an other co. that makes them better than deere?

Shoup. No questions asked. Many folks around here (and probably there too) using Shoup. High quality parts (most better than what dealer offers) for a smaller price. We just purchased 48 discs and 24 sets of scrapers for a Kinze 3700. About 60% the cost of dealer.

I had gotten some very cheap blades and bearings on a planter once from a planter jockey that have now started to fall apart.  The bearings have been going out before the disks are worn out.  I am going to just buy more Shoup ones. I did buy some bearings and rivets and replaced a few but it was a lot of work to get some more life out of a disk blade that probably will be worn out very soon.

Took out my scraper assembly also when disk came off.  Good thing I didn't drive over the disk.

Shoup also has the titanium scraper for Deere which we have also used with excellent results.  Shoup usually offers 10% off at the NFMS. You then take those savings and invest them downtown site seeing after the show.

Also Shoup is offering disc blades for the 63 and 64xx Sunflower soil finishers. We get all our flangett bearings for the reels and disc gangs on the Sunflower (we get the better quality option). Their spike harrow parts will also work on the Sunflower. We ran some poly wear pieces they are working on for Drago this fall.

Working on 1750 6 row. JD blades are good at almost 15" diameter but 10 out 12 blades have loose bearings. Just put on all new Shoup.

Check that your blades aren't shimmed too tight. That is the most common cause of early bearing failure. When in doubt, blades are better set on the loose side. The side load when in-soil will still keep them tight, without shortening bearing life.

Thanks for your comments. Had 6 to 7 shims on each blade where I usually find them. I set the blades at 2 inches of contact using printer paper not business cards as I've seen recommended. I noticed the row unit shanks had cracks just ahead of rear close wheel housing. This tells me the planter is planting around sharp corners putting stress on the blades.
