Subject: Advice on Agco tractors

Nebraska, The land of corn and cattle

Were hoping to pick up some more ground in the future, along with switching from 6-36 to 12-30 rows, and we are wanting to upgrade tractors when we do it, to something with a powershift and large enough to handle a 12-30 mounted planter without using lift assist wheels.  Right now our newest tractor is a White 160. Weve been Oliver and White and will stay with AGCO. Were pretty STO but being fairly spread out, irrigation, and running cattle we need to cover acres faster.

This tractor would do most of the row crop work and some of the early field work, spring strip till (eventually), planting, liquid fertilizer, cultivating, and hilling, along with pulling a grain cart in the fall. It will be the "big horse", probably not tons of hours but it will stay busy. We would like it to be around or on top of 200hp but where exactly we dont know for sure

Im sure we want to skip the 6000 series Whites, but Ive always had a bit of a soft spot for the 8000 series, I think its hard to find a better looking tractor than a big framed 8000 with nice paint. But weve had little experiance with them or anything newer.  Should a guy skip the 8000s and go right to the DT series? I know the first ones were just the 8000 Whites painted orange, but were not real familar with the different series (A and Bs and whatever else). Also what is there to watch out for on the different series? We definatly want to stay under $100K probably closer to $75k so that leaves out most or all of the Sisu powered CVT models, which Id love to have, but not in the budget when were planning on basically a whole new equipment line.

Also how do they respond to autosteer, that would be in the future also.

Thanks

Willing to bet by this spring you'll be able to buy a dt series in your $ 75-100000 range. We bought a 225b couple years ago for not much more with less than 700 hrs. Most problems we had were covered under warranty, but have had a few electric gremlins. My biggest complainant is the turning radius, but it has duals on the front. I think if it didn't have duals it would turn a lot tighter.

Nagging issue on 6000 was with park brake, found out when cleaning it off to trade that cleaning area where park cable attachs to transmission solved issue. Better late than never! Operation wise only issue was jumpy shift between ranges. Agree Sisu and CVT are great combo.

BENTON, MO

There are some 2012 8650MF lease returns for $105,000, at the top of your price range that would suit your needs.

I have been around 6000 and 8000 series. The 6000 series was the better tractor in terms of reliability. 8000 had stronger 3 pt and a nicer cab when cab equipment worked.

Anything with electro hydraulics can get expensive on repair end and not nearly as reliable.

Several options. The white 61 (6175,6145)series will have cummins and a funk power shift. The Agco allis 96 and 97 series will have a Penske engine(I think) and funk powershift. The Agco dt series will be cummins and funk. The DT A's will be sisu and cvt. I forget the Massey numbers that are equivalent. 8400 series I think. Then Agco DT B's will be sisu and cvt. Massey 8600 series is equivalent. Then of course there is challenger but I won't attempt to discuss them.

You can also get a large small frame in a Massey or Agco. The Agco is an RT series (RT 155, RT 180, etc). These are rare. Massey has several large small frames. They Both can have cvt, or partial auto powershift. Sisu engines in later ones and cummins in earlier and something else in early masseys.

Confused enough yet?

From newest most expensive to older and less expensive:
Large frame, fwa, sisu, cvt:
Massey 8650
dt 205b
dt 180a- dt 220a
Massey equivalent

Large frame, fwa, cummins, PS
dt 160- dt225
Massey equivalent

Large small frame, fwa or 2wd, cummins or sisu, PS cvt or auto 4 or 6 (partial PS)
Agco rt's
Massey 7000 series

Then
Agco 96-9700 and white 6100 series. Which could be fwa or 2wd, powershift and Penske or cummins powered.

Keep us posted with questions. Look on tractor house and tractordata.com to help you figure out the different ones.

Good luck.

IIRC the 96 and 97 Allis had the Detroit? If we got one of that vintage it would be the White, as we are familar with the 8.3 Cummins.  We want to stay with a true large frame to handle the weight of saddle tanks and the planter or whatever is hooked to the 3pt.  I dont think the 6000 series would have quite enough lift for a planter with both the seed boxes and insecticide boxes full, it would probably be right at the max (tractordata lists it at 9900 lbs) I would think. TD lists the 8000 at 14000.

From your list I think that the DT 160-225 are probably our best bet so far.

I have a White 8710 tractor. I like it a lot, but it has had a few electrical issues. I have a local dealer that is very good about helping me get back up and running. Currently on the classifieds section of NAT there is a an Agco DT200 that I would be very interested in myself if it fit my budget. I believe it has the same engine and transmission (18 speed power shift) as my White. Probably about the same tractor, just orange instead of silver in color. It's listed for $62,500. There is also a White 8510 listed with just over 3000 hours for $42,500. Don't know if it would quite be enough hp for you, but it says it is turned up to 185 hp. Same frame and engine (Cummins 8.3) as my 8710. Don't know if you have a particular color in mind, but Challenger (part of the Agco family tree) tractors seem to be pretty well liked, and you might find a good one with a CVT well within your price range. Have a cousin who runs almost all Challengers and he likes them.

On your last point about how these tractors respond to auto steer. I use a Trimble 500 with ez steer on my 8710 with no problems. I made my own bracket to make it fit, but I'm guessing there is probably a Trimble made bracket to fit these tractors. I don't use RTK, just WAAS (I think those are the right designations. I'm not a big techie guy, just use it because it works so well.)

Was looking to upgrade one of my White 140's to a larger tractor. Right now my big tractor is a 2008 MF 8480, 3500 hrs, with the 8.4L Sisu and cvt. Figured I would be getting into a 8000 series White with 4000ish hours for mid $60K. Ended up picking up a 2008 Challenger 665B from Auctiontime somewhere in the $50k area with 3100 hrs. It gives me room to have some work done to it, and I am sure it will need it. The Sisu/cvt models are out there. It depends on how picky you are and what you are looking for. A local dealer has a '05 MF 8480 that has the dyna step (cvt with software programmed as a powershift) that has been on the lot since 2012. He started out a $113,000 when I was looking in 2012 for an 8480. Still has it and I know that it nosaled on an auction earlier this month. I think he had $69K on it. When he found out I was looking for another big tractor he said not to let he price bother me, he was willing to deal. If grain/cattle prices don't turn around a little I don't think you will have issues finding what YOU want for the $ YOU want if you are reasonable and willing to travel.

Edited to add, I have a Trimble EZ Pilot on my 140's, 6144, and have had it on my 8480. Now have auto pilot on the 8480.

We had a dt 225. Very good tractor. Gave 82,500 for it with 600hrs. Probably 5years ago.
Traded for a dt205b. Also a good tractor.
We also have had a dt180a for 4 years. Gave 90,000 for it with 500 hrs. Bought it from a Deere dealer who wanted to wholesale it. It has been trouble free except currently the climate control is not working right.
I like our Agco tractors. We have great dealer support from 2 different dealers. I would not want to own any later model tractors without good dealer support.

On another note, I have seen a few very nice low houred 8x20 and 8x30 series deeeres sell in the past month between 90-110k.

We have owned an 02' DT 200 since 04' and have had good luck overall with it. Cummins engine is good and so is the power shift. I have had some minor issues with the hydraulic remotes several years ago along with some electrical issues with the 3pt hitch. My main aggravation the last few years has been the air conditioner compressor bracket has worn and then eventually cracked and broke. Welded that one up only to fail and then purchased a new bracket which also failed shortly from poor welding from the supplier. A minor thing, but the location of the compressor is not the best. Overall a good machine and you could find a DT 200 or 225 for a good price now. I wish ours had the electronic joystick like our 205b has which I guess was an option on the early DT models.

There has been some newer Challengers selling online for pretty cheap, they will be the same as MF and Agco.
