Subject: Volvo Engines ???

West Central MN (between MMF and Larson's)
Need to add another semi tractor. In the search have encountered some Volvo's and don't have any experience with them good/bad/ or indifferent. Have any of you ??? Specifically the VED13 engine.

Reliable? Power? Ease of service/parts?

Thanks in advance.

Excellent engines, as good as anything out there. Limited # of places that will work on one.

I don't have one. But I did speak too a few that had them they weren't impressed with fuel milage(local work). However if you pick up truckpaper magazine and read through it. You will find alot of cat and Cummins saying fresh overhaul or rebuilt. You won't find any if at all a few volvos rebuilt. Look and you will see.

Ontario Canada
Volvo/Mack use the same engines, just differences in programming. They are getting better MPG than the compareable Cummins.

Those VED 13 engines can be programmed lots of different ways depending on gear ratio, tire size, etc and some hp settings the torque setting can go up 1750# torque, I'm thinking it might have to be an I-Shift tranny, but not sure. My VED 12 has been a good engine for me.

One that my brother looked at had a 10 speed tranny.

We've got a few 13 liter ones, good engines. I was sceptical after having Cummins for awhile and cats before them, we have had less problems with the volvos than any of the others. We have a 12 liter in a tri axle and I don't like it near as well as the 13s. The 12s have a common problem of leaking oil where the inj harness goes into the valve cover, not bad to fix, just tough to get clean, and then get the glue from Volvo, works very well.

My VED 12 is 465 HP @ 1650 torque 3.55's 10 spd auto-shift, tall 22.5's, will run with any other truck of equal HP, and usually better MPG, very few break downs, 650,000 miles, on a 40 ft hopper.
Just like other trucks they had some problems with the anti pollution crap,at first, but think they got most of it corrected. Just my opinion. I load in fields and elevators and bin sites, so not all highway miles.
Edit: yes that injector wiring harness leaked at the valve cover, was changed on my truck, no big deal.

I have a Detroit Truck, Cummins truck, Mercedes Truck, and the old 1998 Volvo. 15 degrees out the only one that will start is the Volvo. Very little trouble with the old nag.

I've heard of cam issues from a guy that runs newer macks. Any truth to this being a widespread problem.

If those truck don't start at tempratures below 0 f something is wrong! have have started a 12.7 detroit and a mb 4000 when the temp was almost -20 F. No either. Just cranked over about 5 seconds!.Both started about the time I realized they were not plugged in.

My 06 has the intake manifold heater, and it will start any time you need it to start, have started it below zero several times. No plug in available where I park my truck.

I work in the ND oil fields and the company I work for has around 350 2013-2014 Volvos with VED13 and I shifts in them most trucks have between 150-300k miles and between 10-15k hours on all of them basically run all day everyday. We had some def pump issues due to dirt getting into the tank and just normal wear and tear and a couple emissions issues but over all the fleetof Volvo's has had something like a 98+% up time since we have owned them. I personally have put a few thousand hours on various trucks before moving into the office and its the nicest driving truck I've ever been in and keeps up with similar spec'd trucks. If/when I quit here and farm back home I will be buying a Volvo when I need a truck

Ontario's middle east
We have 4 with 500hp d13 and ishift and we are pulling 140k lb doubles. Seem to be getting along fine. They are 14-16s. There were some emission troubled early ones I think they worked that out starting about the 12s? Probably about the same as other manufactures
