I think I got everything ready to remove the injection pump on my cat 3208, but don't have the tool to get the drive gear loose. Anyone know a good way to get the gear loose without the "cat" puller.
Also I have the engine at TDC and the pin in the injector pump notch: Is that all I need to keep it in time?

By having the engine on TDC does that mean you have the bolt out of the front cover and screwed back in the timing hole into the camshaft . You can remove the gear without the puller but it is a tapered fit and stuck on very tight .I believe it takes two 1/4 inch coarse thread bolts to screw into the gear and a round steel plate with holes for the bolts and a hole for the pusher bolt. the 1/4 inch bolts have to be hard or they may snap off .

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

This one might be cheap enough to buy = your choice.

Now, I don't know why CAT when to such an "indepth" tool (new style), when the old style WITH correct bolt lengths and Grade 8 bolts were used, worked perfectly fine for many years.

I don't have a good picture, of the old style, but is was basically just a "two-step" round chuck of metal, with two outer horseshoe shaped grooves, cut out for the small grade 8 bolts to fit into = you just removed original tach drive bolt, installed this "two-step" spacer, then finger tighten the 2 - "correct length" grade 8 bolts, then slowly snugged them up evenly until gear popped loose. As said earlier, You must use good bolts AND have good thread engagement BEFORE you start to tighten, BUT bolts can't be too long or will bottom out.

I turned engine until 1/4" rod would go in slot of injector, then went around to crank to see about putting bolt in there. Couldn't get to that spot, but saw that the engine crank was showing TDC on crank shaft position indicator. Will that work?

Thanks for all the pictures.
I finally just took a piece of 5/16 steel and drilled two holes in it. Put over hole tightened the bolts and it popped right off

Morgantown, Indiana
I would put the bolt in to the cam to make sure it does not move when installing the pump. you do not want the timing off any
