Looking for a reasonably priced side by side. Doesn't need to set speed records, just be reliable. Anyone own one of these John Deere XUV 550s? How do they hold up? What other brands compare to them?

Yes so far so good. Bought one for dad a month ago. Has enough pep and actually rides and handles excellent. Would buy again.

I'm wondering about one also. How are the Briggs and Stratton engines holding up?

Ours is alright, pain in the butt to work on. Had throttle cable start to fray so would only go half speed until we figured out cable was bad. Air filter plugs up fast and hard to get at. Had ours 3 yrs. like you said not super fast but works ok. Do not push on gas pedal while starting always suppose to use choke. Never had any other UTV so can not compare.

How often does the air filter plug? We are in the desert and would use it for irrigation. Plenty of dust

We will put 10,000 miles per year on irrigating. We tend to find weak spots in everything!

Our 2011, 800 has 2500 miles, ujoints out, front end loose, oil leaks, smell burning oil even it leaks oil so bad presently, have to add oil on regular basis. Won't ever buy another polaris. Will run this one into the ground cause they won't give ya jack for them. Highest depreciation item I've ever owned.

I think I'd get a good used Jeep Wrangler if all I wanted was an irrigation runner and a Honda Rancher wouldn't do. You don't seem to get much in a side by side for the money.

Air filter on 550 is right behind seat with 4 tabs that are a pain to get at. Need to build a tube to top of canopy so sucks clean air. We clean ours way to often for what should be an off road vehicle IMHO. It is handy for irrigation and just scooting to check close fields but way over priced in my mind.

They have had clutch issues on some of them. One of the local dealers won't sell them anymore.

My experience with polaris third party warrantee company was bad bordering on horrible. Transmiision went out completely wore out at two hundred hours. I had complained to dealer about noise but was told that was the way they were. Got it back, rear end went out about two hours later. I eventually got covered but only after finding my copy of the waranty and demanding arbitration. Oh, the new transmission leaked so I took it in at the end of the season and they tried to charge $600 to put a bead of silicon in. I said it was bad from the factory why the charge. Dealer said only 30 days on parts, you went too long, I said what about extended warranty and he got a bad look and they covered that eventually too.

Never had any difficulties with extended warranty from anyone other than Polaris.

I hope they're good...we bought one two weeks ago. Not engineered very well, the oil dipstick is under the bench seat and you can barely see the motor with the bed raised. I like it though, we were looking for something simple we could work with. It will still do 25mph and is 3k cheaper than the 625i

A friend of mine who works at a very large polaris dealer says their warranty is easy to deal with. So idk depends on the dealer I guess

I've had my 550 for a little over a year. I bought it with 180 hours on it. It's got about 240 on it now. It's my first xuv so I can't comment if it's better than anything, but I haven't had any trouble with it. For the price it seems like they're hard to beat.
