michigan | 2000 kenworth with 3406e ran fine until the other day. While loading in the field or dumping at the dryer we let them run once you go to take off runs fine until you get up over 1500 rpm and it will sputter a little but still has good power. Pulling doubles 160,000 pounds pulls good but after a few miles it will smooth out. Next load same thing what could cause this new filters no chamge. Could the pedal do this if it was a injector would it smooth out after a while or do it always. Thanks in advance for any help

Dearfield Co. | what fuel pressure is it running? Good possibility your lift pump is dying or you have other issues in the fuel delivery system. Could even have a line that is trying to collapse. There are also a ton of other things but without being there and hearing it and watching it pull it would be hard to diagnose without my magic 8 ball

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80 | First, it would be really nice to know what your fuel pressure was, during this event/sputter. CAT says anything below 35 psi, may cause issues, under a load. (if that was the issue, I would probably replace the fuel return check valve; because you already had replaced fuel filters, you said)
Next, you might have a slightly loose injector wire nut and maybe there is some arcing occurring, under a load. These are the two small nuts, on EACH injector, on those little studs, coming out the top of each solenoid. You must be reasonable gentle with these, because you can easily over-tighten and break the stud off the electric solenoid. Dearfield Co. | It could also be trying to roll a check valve in the hand pump if it has one. I would think if it was the inj harness it would eventually throw a light.

Brighton Colorado | Mine did that in a 379 pete. My fuel pressure was at 20 psi.

michigan | no check engine light and once you drive it for a while the problem goes away. the only time it does it is after it has sat at a idle for say a half hour or so. runs good up to 1500 no flutter at all. over 15 16 hundred and a flutter if you let off and shift runs normal up to those rpm again after a few miles runs normal until you let it sit again. like I said it still pulls like a locomotive even with 2100bushel of corn but just has this problem after sitting it does not have a fuel pressure gauge on the truck where would you plumb in a manual one to check it out ? thanks for the replies guys hopefully mother nature gives us a couple more days so we can finish shelling corn but forecast does not sound good so we can get it checked out

It almost sounds like you might have "air" getting built up, in the fuel system (or air is getting built up, in the fuel filters) then it starts to get "pushed out" while driving , but it takes a while for all that air volume to get thru the complete fuel system {couple miles of driving), and then finally, the fuel filters get mostly fill of fuel again (then the engine runs good, again) This is just a guess, but it would require some fuel sight glasses to prove this "air in fuel" type of problem.
Here's where to plumb a fuel pressure gauge: (3406E fuel filter base_fuel pressure port 2.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 3406E fuel filter base_fuel pressure port 2.jpg (35KB - 521 downloads)

Catlin Il | I have one in a 2000 389 Pete. It looses its prime for some reason. Not very often does it happen so haven't got excited about tearing into the fuel system. Have been told that the hand pumps will go bad after time allowing the system to take on some air and run rough until it takes 100% prime. Try replacing the hand pump. Also take a look at it and make sure the handle is threaded down tight.

What is the serial #? I have a guy sitting next to me who knows more about cat engines than cat knows themselves.
