Friend has a 5325 tractor with power reverser and 4500 hours. Has been in the shop several times to fix clutch and power reverser. He is not hard on equipment and is tired of spending money on this tractor. Are they junk or did he just get a bad one.

Have one here. Never had anything wrong with the actual power reverser/clutch.

Has always been various electrical problems, relays, switch, corroded connections etc. It's sitting right now.....won't engage and move in either direction. Last time it did something similar it took dealership a lot of hours and $$ to find a bad relay in the end.

The only mechanical problems have been the MFWD seals, bearings, drive shafts etc and rear axle bearings.....multiple failures there.

Friend has had those failures also.

Dash quit. Lights work intermittently. Rear bearings make noise. Eats Fuel..... Lots and lots and LOTS of fuel for the HP (even after you fix the leaking fuel tank). Can't keep an air filter clean. Leaks coolent, oil, hydraulic and fuel . No low end power.... No high rpm (been to the dealer twice to try to get if to rated rpm, not going to happen). No grease Zerks on front axle.(they are in the owner's manual). Eats front tires, while the rear rims crack. The first milkweed plant will pull the wires for the MFWD off. Touch the paint and discover rust....... It is the greatest tractor EVER!!!!

The seat is guaranteed to get your butt wet.

Built with union pride and community college engineering.

I forgot the tilt steering column will not stay in one place and the clutch pedal spring frequently breaks. I'll let you know what it is like after 2000 hrs.

If your friend didn't order the "premium" hydraulic package, there is no detents on the hydraulic. You will need a wire or other jury rig thing to hold the lever to run a hydraulic motor.

Feed the help well also as anyone under 120# will not make the seat safety switch believe there is an operator present. (My daughter picks big flat rocks to put on the seat when she needs to convince it.)

I just sold my 5325 a few weeks ago, to a non-farmer estate owner that won't put nearly the amount of hours on that I have. Purchased in 2005 and sold it with 6400 hours.

The powereverser tractors have a "driveline damper" in the place of a regular clutch, it had to be replaced early this year at a cost of considerable $$$. Mechanic says they usually fail at just past 4000 hours. Replaced over the past few years were the water pump, steering cylinder hoses, fuel lines, shift lever boots, and complete tie rods (can't grease 'em, they'll just wear out).

If the reverser will not engage the first thing I'd check is the safety switch under the seat. Pull out the harness connector, short it with a small wire and tape over. My uncle's tractor, similar, gets less hours but already had the damper/clutch replaced earlier and the also the steering column flops around due to failed little adjustment cylinder that costs a lot. I fully realize the hazard of getting the MFWD wires disconnected and the lack of low-end torque.

For being a daily chore tractor, it has been quite reliable. I just hope it's replacement ( 5075E with FT4 DPF, no DEF) will work at least as well, and not want me to say "I want my old tractor back".

We have a 5525 that has been very reliable. Has just under 2000 hours and we have done nothing but change oil and filters. But it does not have the reverser. Very powerful for a small tractor...would easily out-pull the 6400 we had for a while. Before the 5525, we had a 5300. No problems with it that I can recall, just a much lighter weight, less powerful tractor. Both pretty tough, The 5xxx's are the best utility tractors I have ever been around. This series is the first time Deere has ever had a decent utility.

Complaints about the seat getting you wet? Really?? Let's see...if it sets outside in the rain/dew, what do you expect? Put it in the shed!

Mine sees utility chores around the vineyard. I'm at 1800 hrs and it's doing well. My only concern is with the MFWD as it now clunks a little when disengaged and the wheels turned. The PowerRverser was terrific when repetitively moving rocks. The fuel filter seems to leak and needs changing more frequently than my Landini Mistral 50. I'm not a fan of the hydraulic filter location. I'm in need of another narrow vineyard tractor and have looked for a lightly used 5x25N series to fit the bill.

I have a 5425. I did have a clutch put in at about 3,600 hours. But I did buy it used also. I am very happy with mine. The back of the seat flips down. the only thing I don't like is the fiberglass fenders limit the visibility by the rear tires.

5425 and 5525 is a different frame and a 4 cylinder vs 5cylinder engine. Not the same machine.

I bought a straddle mount to do maple syrup. You have to empty the buckets of SAP regardless of the weather. I wish I could just put it in the shed, but a flip up seat would be nice. Firewood and cleaning hedgerows gets done in the snow (we already had 2 inches) tend to get on and off the machine often in that job,. I wish I could just put a shed over everything for that job as well. Foolish to run a cab in the forest.

For all my complaints, it is a handy machine. I wonder if the 3x3 transmission without the power reverse would solve the expensive failings. I'm mostly mad that I drank the green kool aid. It is not the superior product I was lead to believe.

We owned a 5225 for 8000 hours. I will never own another JD 5000 series tractor with a comprehensive warranty.

Traded the 5225 for a 5083E. Similar issues. Warranty runs out at 5000 hours. Tractor has 3400 ours on it now

I know I don't have the same model, FWIW I use mine in the woods to haul out firewood using a winch mounted on the 3-point. I did price out new which was over my budget. Come to think of it I drove a new 5325 on the dealer lot. I hated it. There was no way it would have worked out for me. I probably would be just as upset as you are.
