Subject: Cummins ISM- Good or Bad?

West/NW Minnesota
I am looking at a Kenworth with an ISM. Currently all I have are 3406 and C12 on the farm. What are the pro/cons of this engine? It is the same size as basically as the c12 correct?
It is an 06 or 07 and has 650k on it. It has egr but I don't think it has any other emissions on it.
Thanks

Brady

I have a 07 model with very little issue, only have 200k on it though. Was told it was not a million mile engine, I would never put that many miles on in three lifetimes.

They are known as a 650K engine. I have experience, in that mileage. Mine blew, and I put
in another same, used engine with around 350K, so far so good.

Otherwise that is common with some small blocks, so consider that. Some big blocks may
go much longer, but not always. Get all the history you can, that does help. Don't let the
KW emblem impress you beyond the engine.

I have two of them. One in a 05 with 430k miles and a 06 with 407k miles. I was told the same thing as others, they will run 650-750k without issues. Seems to be a lot of International 8600's with low 400k miles for sale (that's what mine are) I don't know what their asking but $25,000 will buy one like mine. I thought that was a good price for something that new with those miles.

just bought an international with one this summer, approx. 650k., knew something was wrong from the start but thought whatever if I have to rebuild it at least I know what I got. after about 500 miles pulled the dipstick and oil was milky looking. took it in, on the way the turbo went out. they quoted 12 grand, when I left with it I took home a $17k bill. ran it for about 25 miles, pulled dipstick, white milky oil again. took it back and they put a water pump in it and assured me over and over that wasn't the original problem. so now if I replace the alternator and starter I will know exactly what I have with warranty. I will say that after the overhaul it is a completely different truck. hopefully it will be here for years to come. the truck is an 06' so hopefully it will hold together for a long time. who knows I guess.

the thing is I can drive you to several different guys farms real close that bought what they thought were decent trucks and have taken a bath on them. the best advice I can give is do not buy one from taylor and martin, and whichever one you pick be sure that you have a good mechanic that will work on that particular truck and engine if needed. I can fully relate to that too, I have a freightliner sitting in my yard that no one will work on because it has a MB4000 engine in it.

so to answer your question I like the new ism in the old truck that I have. its a cummins, they tell me, "you think that was expensive to rebuild, try taking in a cat"

NECIL
We have a 2009 ISM in our T800. Didn't know how I'd like it since I've really only had experience with a C-12/13 but I love it. Plenty of power and gets decent fuel mileage. The last truck I drove when I hauled fuel full time had a C-13 in it that was an oil hog. Always needed a gal at 5,000 miles after an oil change and then another gal every 2,500 miles after that. My C-12s always took a gal by 10,000 which I thought and was told wasn't bad. I don't recall adding much to the ISM this summer, maybe a couple quarts. So far it's been a good motor.
