NC Iowa | i have been buying carhartts for probably the last 30 years. i could wear the coat for chores for years, and would be just about rags before my wife made me throw it and get a new one. the zipper still worked though. the last 2 jackets i got, the zipper failed, and the jacket was still is pretty good shape. i called the company to complain about the poor quality zippers. the guy said they were working to improve the zipper quality, and offered to send me a replacement zipper. i received the zipper, but it looks like it is a real job to replace it. far beyond my skills. if i pay to take it somewhere, i just as well forget it and buy a new one. is there a halfway easy way to replace the zipper? if not, looking for recommendations for a different brand. I have had last few that the deal you grab and pull breaks off. I use a large paper clip to replace it. Their zippers aren't great otherwise either.

Central In | Not Carharts, but I got several jackets that have bad zippers. I recently read the story of zipper invention and improvements....before that it was hooks and buttons.

Chaffee, Western New York | Front load washers destroy all zippers. But yes they don't make them half as well as they did.

well my mom replaces them for about 10 to 20 bucks, depending on the style of coat, still don't help you though

Columbia, MO | I've done the exact same thing for the same reason. I usually lose the paper clip though.

Hay string works great also. Have a carhartt jacket that the zipper pull broke on and just tied some hay string to it. have to replace the string about once a year but other than that still works great.

45 miles south spingfield il. | I was told the zipper was good for life- send coat in and they replaced. Never did this but A friend used to do so, about 10-12 years ago.

Central In | Ha! My problem isn't gorilla ripping the tab, but the zippers get stuck and perhaps come untracked. Would WD 40 once a year help?....before they are stressed?

Central In | That sounds good. That reminds me of my water distiller. It had a life time guarantee. That worked the first time. A few years later and after a buy-out, they told me that a life time guarantee is 10 years.

The 'seat and top' shop in town does some of that kind of repair on heavy weight work clothes.......Carhartt, etc. You might try a similar place, or perhaps the place that makes semi tarps, or an upholstery shop. It takes a heckuva sewing machine to be able to handle the thickness of the canvas clothing fabric and the fabric of the zipper as well.

I was told rub a bar of soap on the teeth of the zipper.

Sounds like a 30-30 warranty, 30 feet or 30 seconds which ever comes first.

lube your zippers with wax, (rub a candle) is the way zipper companies say to help your zippers, the other main problem is guys pulling the coat apart to unzip it instead of using the tab. Mom must do 50-75 jackets a year, snowmobile, carhartt, anything in between. You can also buy a new pull and put it on, just have to take apart the top end and slide it on, then resew it. No special sewing machine, just a good heavy duty is needed.

DeSoto Iowa | We have repaired zippers by sewing the new zipper on the old webbing easy to do and gains another inch or two for the girth.

SC KY | I saw a video from a zipper mfg. They showed how you can pinch the up and down thingy on the top and it will work again. I had 3 hoodies that the zippers came apart after I zipped the. So I pinched it with needle nose and they all work again.

+1, rubbing a bar of soap works too, and so do the fat pencil's lead, I was in a last resort last Spring while planting and put a little planter graphite in one of my jersey gloves, and that worked too, lucky I had a black coat, a little went a long way.

This sounds interesting. Will have to remember this if a zipper breaks in an almost new jacket. For me to do the work involved in replacing a zipper in Carhartts, they have to be in really good shape. It is a lot of work...plus I would probably break at at least two sewing machine needles doing it.
