West Central Ohio | Working on my "new to me" sprayer. What is the best PTO pump for the sprayer? Need something that is mounted/tethered to the tractor and attaches to the PTO. 60 foot booms, 1000 gallon tank if that means something. |

NWC Ohio | If you go with a 1000 rpm mounted right to the pto stub on the tractor, make sure to mount the pump to framework that bolts solidly to tractor , and use some sorta chain coupling to drive it by. ( think JD header drive gear/chain coupling). If you don't the movement of your drawbar will be transmitted to the pump and you will have pump gear case failure. ( Hypro direct drive gearcase style) I don't know what tractors your running it on but I would seriously think about going with a Hydralic driven pump and leave the pump on the sprayer. If pto is a must for the sprayer I would consider mounting a pump on the sprayer and using a pto shaft to connect them.
Edit. Not sure your intended speed, or gpa, but for that size sprayer your going to need a centrifugal pump, or maybe a diphram pump like a hardy has. A roller pump won't have the gpm that i think you will desire.

West Central Ohio | I was thinking of mounting the pump the sprayer. Has anyone ever retrofitted a sprayer like this?
This will be pulled by a JD 4640

NWC Ohio | I've pump pto pumps on a couple sprayers. You want the pump shaft and pto shaft on the tractor to be as straight across as possible. If the pump is higher than the tractor pto you run into driveline angle, and pump pulsing issues. The u joints slow down and speed up as they rotate/change angle and this can be seen on a pressure gauge on the pump outlet as pressure fluctuations/pulses. |

Sw Ohio. Cedarville | WHY?? WHY not run a hyd pump. 10 x better than a PTO pump |

Sanilac Co. Michigan | Could be dealing with open center hydraulics. In some cases that could dictate the use of a specific hydraulic motor. PTO pump bypasses all that stuff. |

| I ran a hyd driven spray pump, on a 700 versatile for 15 years
had ,has a closed center system,
edit !!! you would think after 15 years I would remember that the 700 is an "open" system
oil would run about 95 degrees on a 80 degree day

Houston County, GA | Run hydraulic motor off a John Deere 4230 all season with no problems so far. The first remote will provide continuous flow, by pass the remote to reduce friction. 4640 should do even better. |

NC Iowa | the ace centrifugal pump would probably provide the volume and pressure you would need for spraying a 60 foot boom and still have enough capacity for decent agitation. ace is a very dependable pump with a good reputation. easy to rebuild if necessary. this is the direct pto mount. http://www.shoupparts.com/502560/
ace makes a tumble rod pto pump that would mount on the sprayer too. i would prefer a pump mounted on the tractor myself. if it is on the sprayer and connected by a tumble rod, you can turn too short, you can take out the knuckles on the pto shaft pretty fast.
if you can, a hydraulic pump is a much better way to go. your pump's output is not dependent on engine rpm's, so you can idle down in a higher gear and still keep enough pump output. http://www.shoupparts.com/502540/
if in doubt on which hydraulic ace pump to go with to match your tractor hydraulics, they have very helpful support people. just give them a call.

ECIL | OP said he will be using a 4640 which is closed center. It will spin the pump all day with no problems. |

Sanilac Co. Michigan | Sorry, somehow missed the tractor model. Closed center is an easy one. |

SW Minnesota | You tie up a hydraulic outlet. I've run a Hypro with a gear box on the pump that slides on the PTO shaft for 20 years. It is a Model 9306. I originally ran it on a 2510 but mostly on a 4440. With the 44 I have 3 pairs of outlets 2 to tip up and fold and one for height adjustment. |

Macon, IL | 4640 and hydraulic pump are great combo-if you haven't purchased yet please rethink your plan.
I went from PTO to hydraulic and would NEVER NEVER EVER go back. So much more capacity-don't have to worry about engine RPMs dropping when you let out clutch messing with spray rates-no chatter on turns, easier hookup. No reason that I can think of to spend money on PTO pumps today unless you simply don't have the hydraulics to run it.
I am running 10 gallons per acre through a 90ft boom and it can keep up at 8mph with 4640 running ACE pump. |
