What do you guys use to seal around the bottom of your grain bins? And what's your preference, the inside of the bin, or the outside?

thanks, gordon

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

Looks like about the same stuff that is multi-level marketed for a bunch more money by another outfit. I bought a couple rolls of 4" wide fabric from a grain bin dealer and picked up the sealer at the local hardware store - turned out they run sales from time to time and it is even cheaper. I did my bins in '04 and paid $39 for a 5 gal. pail of the stuff. I went back and recoated the seal a year later and it is holding fine and won't need attention this year.

did you have to remove any tar products before putting the kool seal on?

If the tar was loose and flaking off, we scraped it off. The stuff that was still tightly bound (not much was), we left there.

SE Nebraska, Near Misery and Cans Ass!
I just lost two bins that had been sealed with a product that looked like cool seal 5 years ago. They were both rusted out under the sealer. Plastis roof cement seems to have enough oil in it to prevent that. That said the local bin installer uses a 3/4 inch thick, 4 inch wide tar strip that comes in a roll under his bins and that seems to work well. I have had two for 15 years and no leaks yet and no resealing. By the way the insurance wouldn't pay for the bins and I had to agree.

Southwest ND
Conklin has a good product (Rapid Roof) I think. Very good but spendy. CMC in Fargo ND sells a good product also.

we've sealed bins with used 2" fuel hose and held it down with conduit clamps lagged to the concrete. Seems to work ok, the rodents haven't chewed it yet.
