Subject: Krone big square baler

Anybody run a Krone 3x4 square baler. Dealer has one that is almost like new. My problem is I don't think there is a dealer near me for these krone balers. Are they prone to breakdowns, are they easy to operate? Easy to work on? Anything I should be aware of or look for?Do they make good bales ect.?
Thank You

I dont like the krone balers, they dont look easy to work on, or to get parts for, but they do make a darn nice lookin bale.

Does anyone have any experience with this monster? I have only seen pictures of one, but would like to hear from someone who owns one or has operated it.

I am on my 3rd Krone 3x3 big square baler and love it. I have an excellent dealer with an excellent parts and service department for everything they sell. Do a search for Krone balers and you should come up with some of our previous discussions on them. Is the 3x4 you are looking at a newer series one or older? The new series will have the rounded plastic twine box covers, not square metal. The older series was good, but since I have switched to the new series 890, I have found they have fixed some of the problems they were having.

Any other questions, post or email me, but I will warn you I will be quite busy over the next few days with hay as we finally have some sun here!!

Where are you located at?

I personally don't own one, but have been around them and have two different neighbors that run 3 between them. The one has a Big X 1000. They have had very good luck with them and the customers they have been chopping for have been very impressed with the finished product.

Subject: We run 4 of the 4X4 Krones

Having baled with Hesston for about 20 yrs, I was a little reluctant to switch to Krone. Having just finished 1st crop, 7,200 bales, I have to say that I am IMPRESSED!
I bought 4 of the Big Pack 12130 which is the 4X4 and attached a PhiBer bale accumulator to each.
These balers have cut our baling time in half and that translates to less fuel used. 4 Balers can bale a pivot and 4 corners, 160 ac. in 1 1/2 hrs. That is one 1st crop. I'm sure that 2nd will be even faster. Baling speed has been about 9 mph. Better have some smooth fields.
Couple of things I like is there is no flywheel shear bolt. Krone also has a system that unplugs if you get a wad in the pickup chamber. Knotters are very similiar to Hesston. All balers come with the Auto lube, grease, not oil. Balers also come with it's own knotter blower and air compressor.
Consturction is superior to Hesston, as they do not cut corners. Yes you will pay alittle more, but the quality is definitely there.

Agreed with everything Mike said. I bought a 4x4 this past winter and have loved it. I'm new to the hay business, had zero previous experience baling, but with the krone my lightest bales have been 2000 lbs- and that was oat/rye grass hay. Alfalfa anywhere from 2100 to 2300lbs. easy to overgross a truck. Mike- one question- after a couple of plugs, the unplugging of the pickup chamber has been done by hand. Is there a clutch or something that needs adjusting?? agree also with 9 mph, but with an 8300, the gear gap is either ~8mph or 10 mph, wish I could get 9.

If it's the same as the "power feed" on the old Deere 100's(should be I think/been a few years) there's a cover on the side held by 2 cap screws. Open that up and move the nut, decreasing/increasing the effect of the power feed, sorry I can't remaber which way is which. With that said be dang careful you can explode the stuffer if you over do it.--loran

Mike. How many bales per hour are you getting out of the Krones? Hours per pivot dosen't tell me much. With the 4910's I was averaging over 40 bales per hour in 1st.

Jay: Looking at my records on bales per pivot, it looks like it would ave. about 330 bales. Some pivots, older stand are less while newer seedings are higher. 4 balers so pivot and 4 corners in 1 1/2 hrs on the ave. Some, alittle more time some alittle less. One big factor is how smooth the ground is.
I would say the ave is about 56 bales per hour, per baler. Ave. bale wgt is 1980.
I also think we can improve speed as the operators get acustom to running them.

Mike The hesston dealer is telling me the new baler is approx 30% faster than the 4910, so it sounds like it's a lot like the Krone for speed. It was taking me 7 1/2 hours to bale 650 bales per pivot with 2 balers. Approx 43 bales per hour per baler. I don't have close dealer support for the Krone so I am sticking with Hesston.

As soon as the wind quits I am going to start baling 2nd cutting. I also started baling straw today.

WOW. Never heard of that many bales on a pivot. Figuring an ave. of 1850lbs per bale, that 6 ton ac. on one cutting.

Pasco WA.
Rained on feeder hay that was baled dry so I figured an average of 1700 lbs. 150-160 acre pivots. Farm average was 3.6 tons of poor quality hay on 1st. The heaviest pivot went 4 ton. The weather wouldn't let me cut when it needed to be cut. 3.6 ton/acre may sound like fun but it's not. Took a full 2 weeks to get it dry. I would much rather harvest 2 lighter cuttings of high quality hay.

With the 7444, if i can ride it fast enough, i put out a bale roughly every 40-45 seconds, probably weighing 1800-2000 lbs

I get busy baling for a few days and don't check the board and you guys ran away with this thread! I'm glad to hear all of the positive comments about the Krone 4x4. My 3x3 just keeps purring away.

If its just the pickup or the pickup and the rotor, the slip clutch is on the side by the drive line that comes down to the pick-up. It has 3 or 4 grease fittings on it. The book says to grease quite a bit. Don't do it!!! Grease it once every 3-5,000 bales is plenty. This is actually a Krone recommendation now. If you grease by the book it will slip too easy. If you've already overgreased, you can take the clutch apart and clean out the grease.
