Well my HoJo had an AI calf from Kingpin. Thats my first AI calf. Still scratching my head if that was a good idea. I'm not actually sure why I keep this cow except she would make a good nurse cow for my daughter to raise calves in the backyard someday. That and she wouldnt bring much at market. This is a heifer calf.

Other fall calves looking good so far. This 105 cow was one I bought open last fall for $643. She was bull bred. We've managed to keep them fed pretty cheap. So I guess that program will work.

Well if the calf doesn't grow it sure isn't from mommas milking ability. She should be able to add another 1000 lbs to your calves if she shares.

Last winter they would line up and take turns. She's kind of like my creep feeder. LOL.

What's the calfs sire? That cow needs a calf on each tit - with your groceries she could probably pull it off

I guess the white legs is the Holstein, huh? I see this bull is heterozygous black. Could a homozygous black have prevented the white legs and tail? Or is that just going to influence overall color?

I'm wanting to wean a 795# calf like these bulls I see. That' kind of what I was thinking.

Looks like a Hereford cross ;) - we use homo black and homo polled on our spotted horn cows ( mixed breed lots of corriente I'm sure ). Have a friend with a ranch stocked with full blood and half blood corrientes - bred to homo black homo polled - jet black calves and 2-3 percent with horns - he's got $300 cows raising $1000 calves - I just can't go the full corriente route - they get out too much lol - but the Hereford cross cows throw nice black calves that grow - my Herefords are 800-900 lbs weaning a good 500-550 calf

Homozygous black wouldn't have made any difference on how much white you get as the white spots are from a different gene.

First pic (big calf ) is when he was about a month old and second pic is today. Notice how this Kingpin son seemed to change color.

Looks like you have a plentiful crop of sicklepod. I find an occasional sicklepod here and pull it up on sight. Does not look as if your cattle have taken even a nibble from yours. Stuff has a bad odor so I guess nothing eats it.

About a month old in the first pic and about 18 months old in the second (same animal).

Oh man. This farm is a wreck with it. Its toxic to cattle. So I think they are sensitive and work around it.. I haven't had any problems. Cows seemed to be finding unharvested corn OK. There's 20 acres of knee deep grass also. So if they eat sicklepod its out of ignorance, not lack of alternatives. This is what the field looked like. And a cow working for unharvested ears. A bit of a trainwreck. The corn didn't get rain for 51 days. Tasseled at 4' tall. Then rained something like 68 of next 85 days. Great weed conditions with no real canopy to shade the ground.

Wow!!! I would not have believed such an infestation without that picture.
What are you or will you be doing to try to control such an infestation? Perhaps converting field to permanent grass and repeated spraying with 2-4-D ? Reading info on sicklepod, it sounds like a tough one.
