Subject: mf 65 generator

I recently bought an old 65,that isn't charging. Tried "flashing" regulator, and bypassing the regulator to test the generator, get about 2 volts out of it. I've googled how to switch to an alternator and got about 3 completely different stories... what is best way to proceed? thanks

The biggest challenge with converting to an alternator is getting it mounted up right. If you can handle that and a 10SI Delco will fit in there, you're good to go unless that tractor was 6 volt.

Even if it was a 6 volt, you can probably crank it on 12 for many years of occasional use before it damages anything (starter).

I have used a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system on my Super A Farmall for over 35 years before it needed to be rebuilt, likely would have needed a rebuild after 60 years even if it had been on a 6 volt system all along. I would switch to an alternator unless you are planning on restoring the tractor and building a trailer queen.

Edit: my conversion was with a small Chrysler external regulator alternator (because I had it from a '65 Barracuda), we did this in the late 1970's.

I would get the generator checked out before converting. Maybe it only needs a set of brushes. If your tach/hr meter is driven off the generator, you will lose it if you convert.

I have seen tach drive kits on the internet to go on the back of alternators.

This is a good and easy to follow plan to fit a delco SI series alterntor.

I'd run with no tack to have a alternator instead of a generator

but then I have seen things run for 8 to 10 years with no working alternator either !!!!!!!!!!!!

just not run after dark
