Subject: Ford Versatile 9030 bi-directional - good bad & ugly?

Kingdom of Callaway - Fulton, Mo 65251

I was at a surplus sale today and bought a 9030 mower tractor. It is a 1996 and has 2300ish hours.  I have never been around one but have always liked the idea of them. I need a extra hay tractor for raking and moving bales and thought I would try it. I am going to chuck the mowers and related stuff and just make it a tractor again.

What are they like?

Do both ends have the same capacity on the 3pt and pto?

Does anyone know where I can find a used loader?

The ones that didn't burn around here ended up in a lagoon or pond to keep them from burning up.

I've got a 276 II that I've put a few hours on.

I think yours has a Ford engine and the heavier axles (cast) if you still have a cummins engine and the reinforced 1 ton axles then you have one of the early 9030s.

Its quick and very nimble but its light.

If you put a full sized 5 x 6 good quality alfalfa bale on the loader the butt gets light (even with fluid in the back tires).

The loader is built too light (so is the whole tractor IMO) and even greasing it regular the main connection area between the bucket and frame just wears.

Is an OK tractor but doesn't like to need to pull real hard - - - its a hydrostat.
Works real good with a hay head in front and make a great swather. I made my own frame and assembled the hydraulic controls - - - would do some things different now.

Forgot - - - its real easy to damage the doors!
The cummins likes to vibrate itself to pieces - - - if that's yours don't idle it at lower than 1000 rpm - - - you will up your life a lot! For moving it and doing stuff the cummins likes to be somewhere between at least 1750 to 2000 rpm otherwise you don't have much torque! Would also suggest that you not run it at max rpms a lot - - - not sure on their life at 2650 rpm!

Weakest point has been the differentials for us.
The oil will tend to migrate from the diff. to the outer drop box reservoirs.
The levels need to be checked often.
If you are going to use the loader much look for the latest loader model. Some of the pins are larger and wear much better.

What are the loader model numbers that will fit a 9030?

What tended to cause the fire tendency? Electrical? Fuel or oil leaks?

Running with parking brake dragging is one cause the other is the main power feed to the power distribution panel breaking just as it enters the cab shorting .....and you can guess the rest.
We had this wire break but not short on anything.
