At some point we are considering making one more combine move (or not) and it would be to what many here thought was about the best combine CaseIH made as far as capacity (for what it is) and reliability. The 2188 we have is a big jump from the 1680 in operator comfort and the hp is really nice to, however I didn't get the tilting feeder house. We went to a 30' head last year and field tracker would be nice (btw, the 30' was cheaper at the time than the 25' heads).

How new would you guys go to get most of the 2188 to 2388 improvements? Seems like a pretty big price jump occurs in the 2000's and I wonder if that was crop price driven or adding stuff that may not be what I want (I can do my own guidance and YM). Any particular set of features that made the 2388 the one to buy back then?

thanks

There's WAY more difference in the 2388 production run than there is between the last 21 and the first 23.  The really valuable upgrades in my experience with those machines really started about MY2001.  At that point, you have the hydraulic feeder reverser, a larger fuel tank that will actually let you run all day, external sieve adjustment, 2-speed spreader.  AFX rotor came next.  If you get into the last 23s then you have extended wear auger package factory-installed.  Also, the paint on the Grand Island machines is far superior.  All of this and more are listed on the Hoober combine timeline, but those are the highlights of improvements that made a difference out in the field through the several different 23 series combines we ran.

not a really huge advantage-less hours trumps any year-that being said-they sure have come down in price-maybe buy a 2388 and keep the 21 also-awesome to have 2188 set for corn-2388 ready to rock in beans

Pat, maybe we can make a deal on my Hagie bundled with my 2388 in the coming years.

Well, unless you plan on retiring to a teepee and living off berries I'm guessing you'll get a better deal elsewhere, though there is nothing wrong with berries

This is a really cool pdf file that shows all the updates throughout the years for axial flow combines from 1977-2013. I referred to this a lot when we were looking at getting a different combine.

If you want to stick with mechanical injection I believe 2005 was the last year for that. The 06' model went to electronic engine control.

If you have a good 2188, you might consider finding a macDon draper header. You don't need a field tracker with them since they follow the terrain with spring pressure. They also cut better than a case-ih head and feed in smoother while having less bean shatter.

I agree with the macdon header route. Might cost a little more than the upgrade to a 2388, but I think productivity would jump more than switching combines. The 23 will have more power. The 21 will have a more durable rotor gearbox and a better air cleaner system. We had a 2188 w/o field tracker that was down to needing a lot of work and we weren't even using it in beans one year but the beans were really turning out so we got a used 30ft D50 to run on it and it made that old combine seem like a sweet machine. We still have a 2388 and don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon so they are good combines too. The hyd head reverser is a nice improvement.

My 2188 will eat most early 2388's alive. The 21's pump is set at 300hp, full set of spike bars on the rotor, along with the Kile front. I helped a buddy of mine in his downed rice and my 21, although not stock, walked all over his 23. As stated the two speed rotor gear case is much more reliable than the early 3 speeds in the 23's. My buddy now has a 7120, so the playing field is much wider now.

+1, my 2188 will out run any early 2388 I've ever been around. The air filter system on an early 2388 is a joke, I do wish I could get a bigger air filter for my 21 though. New rasp bars, Kile front, and the veins set right and it'll flat walk through the field. Not to mention mine doesn't have a chopper so that gives me even more power for threshing. That being said the later model 23's have some nice features, hydraulic reverser being the #1 to me. The majority of the other upgrades can be easily bolted on a 21, of which I have done to mine throughout the years.

As cheap as the 8010s are getting they might be something to consider.

we had a combine like that but it was a 99 2388 that the previous owner had obviously turned up. Still miss that combine.

It took a 1/2 turn of the fuel screw to get my 97 2188 to keep up with my 95 2188. That was with new rotor bars and concave in it as well. Plugged off the waste gate also.

When we move up from the 1688 we have, I'd like to get a 2004+ 2388. Mains reason for a 2004 is that's when they went back to throwing the idler on the belt to engage the rotor instead of the clutches they used in the 1688 and 2188s.

Are you saying they went back to the hydraulic cylinder pulling up an idler pulley to tension the belt to engage the drive?

my 02 2388 has the ram engaged idler to engage.
it also had the culmination of case's quest to make the worst air filter system ever.
( it only could have been topped by taking engine air right off the rotor cage)
that is now cured by bypassing their system , with a pipe off the air cleaner going up to a 400$ spinner .
now it is just as good as my 2188.

the 02 23may have a few more ponies than the 21, but they are close.
the hyd revers-er is nice , but if you only need it occasionally electric is fine.
