Subject: 2 speed rearend not shifting

I have a '68 Binder tandem with a 5 & 2. Getting it ready for corn harvest. Tonight I discovered the 2 speed won't shift. It's 'stuck' on the low side.

I tried to do some simple diagnostics but no luck yet. How do these things work? On the wiring to the shifter, is the hot wire always hot? Tomorrow I'm going to take the shifter apart and see if I juice before and after the shifter itself.

Should the wire always be hot all the way back to the axle? I don't know much about these things as you can tell. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

NCIA
Start on the rear end first, usually a bad connection there.

Usually what I've found is that a rock has been kicked up and broke the wires or damaged them

I drove a '75 Ford B-600 school bus for about 4 years. It was brand new when I started driving it. Every other year I had to replace the boot between the shifter and the axle. For some reason it would rupture, allowing heavy gear grease into the shifter. That would be enough to keep it from shifting out of low. I'd clean the shifter, install a new boot and lube the shifter with the light oil it called for. We were then good to go for another round until it did it again.

When was the last time you used the truck?? Have you checked the oil in the shifter Box on rear axle, worm gear has a ball bearing on the bottom end. There is a switch inside there also, have seen them go bad, maybe the mice ate the wires for lunch, also the switch on the gear shift can quit working also, maybe the fuse is bad.

Block wheels take it out gear might try shifting by hand if all other things fail.
If I remember right the center wire on the gear shift will be the Ground wire.

Good luck, they are not complicated , just common sense and patience will get it working.

Pull the cover on the 2 speed & look at the limit switchs. That is where most of my problems were.

2 wires going into the shift motor.......one is low and the other one is hi. Get someone in the cab and shift the 2 speed (with the key on) and see if the power toggles between the 2 terminals. If it does and the motor is not shifting the 2 speed, either the limit switch or motor is bad. I think I may some new parts for one of these here if you need anything parts wise.

Thanks Pat and everyone. I do have 2 wires going to the 2 speed box on the rear end. One is to energize the high side, one for the low, correct? Should one of these always be 'hot'?

Yes, one or the other should be hot at all times, with the ignition on.

It has been a while but when we had trucks with the two speed rear end, but I always had an extra switch that attached to the gear shift on hand. Seemed like 90% of the time that was our problem.

Ford LN's here. Single axle. Two relays behind seat and always assumed they switched the polarity of the two wires to the shift box. Loose connections have been the problem here except water ruined one shift box.

North End I-15
Most all my 2 speed problems went away after I hung a heavy belt in front of the shifter plate . I fastened it to the motor with a large hose clamp.
Gravel beat up the wires and bent the shifter plate.

I take the cover off every so often clean it out with brake clean and replace the oil. Use ATF which works well even in winter.
