Most important is the 1/8 inch free play at the throw out bearing...Next is to engage the clutch brake at the end of the pedal travel...3/4 inch box end wrench to take out the lock bolt, then turn the pressure plate...If you turn the wrong way it will tell you.

I don't know what the old Mack's have/had. Plus its Mack, they were always different. The modernish trucks you set the gap from throwout to clutch brake at 1/2 to 9/16". Then you can set the brake squeeze and adjust for the freeplay if needed. Shouldn't have to unless someone else messed with it.  There's a couple common ones now, the easy adjust where you hold your ratchet head in with a pry bar and turn the adjuster, the value/"spicer" style where you remove the retainer and turn the pegs. Same concept, different excecutions.  IIRC there may be some with a bolt head style adjuster that has alock plate instead of being spring loaded. There's also the Solo which you probably don't have. You can remove the auto adjuster and install a tool to adjust those.  I'm not very familiar with older stuff and what all may be out there though, not that the clutch in your truck would be old, I just don't have a clue what Mack does.

Did this five speed have the clutch brake on the bottom shaft of the transmission instead of on the main shaft???? If so things are totally different than what is being said here. there has been 4 series of these 5 sods and some of them were this way I just don't know the cutoff date

Got any suggestions how to replace the clutch brake lining on one?

I have an 84 model with the two stick trans. It has the bracelet style brake lining that opens up at one side and snaps back closed. Looks like pushing the pedal all the way down should lock it, but I cannot get it all the way closed.

I got under there to see why it wants to grind every time I put it into the first gear to move it and discovered the clutch brake lining laying in the clutch housing. Looks like it would snap back around the main shaft, but I cannot manage it somehow.

Got to be some trick to this.

There was one made for a while that used a plastic retainer that was like a rivet ------you stepped on the clutch with the engine off to seat it and flatten it on the back side. We had one spit out backing the truck out of the shop. the whole point of using them is ease of installation. The ones that use the two roll pins seem to be about the toughest but also the toughest to get them out. The facing on them will sometimes fly off. The other ones made out of cast aluminum that one hit with a hammer and chisel will peel out of their also seem to wear the worst due to a honey comb design in the aluminum which the lining will eventually sink into and then shear off. I always make sure every time we take a trans out it gets the new plate where the clutch brake hits so it helps them last longer

It is the first type shown above. Looks like two short fat roll pins that hold the two halves together.

I see there are instructions to put one tang in before the other.....possible that I was trying the wrong one in first....maybe I should start with a new one instead of reusing the old one though it looks pretty new.

Thanks!

Take a look at that Ebay link, I posted and there is a second photo, to click on, and view = see that White plastic (like a white plastic rivet, that a4t1600 mentioned) button = maybe it is broken on your current one.

Sounds like a Haldex Quick Change brake.

Are you saying it fell apart and you are trying to put it back on? Or you have a new one and can't get it to lock?

The roll pin style ones are tough as a4t mentioned but also tough to. Get out. They're often called a "Babcock" clutch brake. The quick change style like you have are definitely the fastest.

I think it was installed correctly at one time but fell off and I found it laying in the clutch housing. In my hand I can close it and snap the roll pin into the mating piece just with my fingers. No evidence of a plastic button, but who knows.

I will get a new one and try it.

A new one is dirt cheap, buy two while you are there.
